“Mom and Dad got me a helicopter too. Let’s check it out together later,” Lucinda said, her eyes shining with excitement.
Lydia didn’t even hesitate. “I have to go to the office. I don’t have time.”
Cameron spoke up before the mood could sour. “Lucinda, your sister has important work at the company today. We’ll go check it out with you later.”
Lucinda forced a smile, but inside she was fuming. Important work? So her excitement meant nothing? And since when did Lydia, fresh from the countryside, know anything about running a company? Why did her parents trust her so much? It just wasn’t fair.
Lydia finished her breakfast in record time, said a quick goodbye to Cameron and Kylie, then grabbed her things and left for the office. She didn’t spare a glance for Mr. Norwood or Lucinda. That’s just how she was. If someone liked her, she’d return the feeling. If they didn’t, she didn’t see the point in pretending.
Mr. Norwood glared after her, seething. “Did you see that? You call that polite? She’s been home for days and hasn’t called me Grandpa even once.”
Lucinda jumped in, putting on her best innocent face. “Grandpa, don’t be angry. Maybe she’s just come back and isn’t used to us yet. I’ve tried talking to her a bunch of times, but she just ignores me.”
The message was clear—Lydia was rude.
That only made Mr. Norwood angrier. “I told you, she needs to learn how to behave in high society. How can we introduce her to anyone like this?”
Lucinda quickly tried to smooth things over. “Mom, Dad, Grandpa doesn’t mean he won’t accept Lydia. He just feels like, how can he accept her if she won’t even call him Grandpa?”
The old man immediately nodded. “That’s right. Lucinda understands me best.”
Cameron let out a long sigh. “Dad, Lydia just came home. You should put aside your pride and show her a little warmth. She needs support to adjust, not more pressure.”
Kylie nodded as well. “He’s right, Dad. You have to accept Lydia first. Show her you care. She’s a good kid. She won’t let you down.”
