Benjamin sat there, looking just as confused as his wife, Mandy. “Jackson already told the folks at the training camp what to do. There shouldn’t have been any problems.”
Mandy scoffed. “No problems? Then why did someone else take first place? Those are our people, and they still let someone else win.”
Benjamin frowned, thinking hard. “Maybe this Lydia isn’t so simple.”
Mandy thought about it for a second. “I’ve never even heard of her.”
“She’s this year’s national top scorer. Perfect marks.”
Mandy rolled her eyes. “So what if she’s the top scorer? She’s just a nobody from Lakeview Town. How can she compare to Rosie? Now she’s got first place and everyone’s talking about her. What about Rosie?”
Benjamin considered it, then looked at Mandy, his eyes narrowed. “If it comes to it, we’ll just have Lydia’s results thrown out.”
Mandy nodded right away. “Exactly what I was thinking. The whole camp is basically run by Jackson. We can come up with a reason to disqualify her. That shouldn’t be hard.”
Benjamin said, “You should call him. You’re his sister. It’ll be easier if you handle it.”
But Mandy shook her head. “This is small. I’ll just call the training camp director.”
The truth was, Mandy didn’t dare call Jackson about something so minor. They were siblings in name, but she was only the adopted daughter of the Hydes family. Lately, with Jackson moving up in the world, she found it harder and harder to talk to him about anything, let alone something like this.
Benjamin nodded. “Alright. I’ll call the camp director.”
Lydia’s group finished the challenge early and got to go back to the base to rest. Rosie’s group didn’t win, but they came in a close second.
