Mandy’s heart jumped into her throat. She shot up from the sofa like she’d been shocked. Rosie felt the tension too and glanced nervously at her mom. “Mom, is someone breaking in?”
Mandy’s face was tight with worry as she marched straight for the door, Rosie close behind. The moment they stepped outside, they were met with the sight of a group of men in crisp suits pushing past the gates like they owned the place, heading right for the main house. The guards tried to hold them back, but it was useless.
“Who do you think you are? How dare you break into the Gibson house?” one of the guards yelled.
In the Capital, nobody had ever dared to storm the Gibson family’s home so openly. It was unthinkable.
The men in black parted, clearing a path. A body was suddenly tossed at Mandy and Rosie’s feet. The man hit the ground hard, coughing up blood as he landed.
Mandy’s breath caught. “Leopard?” she cried out, recognizing the man immediately.
Leopard was the head of their security team, a guy they trusted with all their big problems. He was tough, the kind of man you didn’t mess with. But now...
“Mrs. Gibson. You still recognize him?” The voice was cold and came out of nowhere.
Mandy looked up, her eyes wide with shock, and saw Connor walking toward them. He looked every inch the man people whispered about, tall and cool, with a coldness that made the air feel thin around him.
For a second, Mandy couldn’t believe what she was seeing. “Connor… Jefferson?” she stammered.
Why was he here? And why like this? Her mind raced, searching for any reason she might have given him to show up on her doorstep with this kind of force. She thought about the tension between Connor and her brother Jackson and felt her stomach twist even tighter. Was this revenge? Was he coming after the Gibsons because he couldn’t get to her brother?
Rosie was just as stunned. She’d heard a lot about Connor, but seeing him in person was something else. He looked even more powerful, more impossible to reach. And to think, that annoying Lucinda actually managed to be his fianceé. The thought almost made Rosie snort. Still, only someone outstanding like Connor could be a real match for her uncle.
But what confused her was Leopard. He was supposed to be out handling Lydia. How did he end up here, at Connor’s mercy?
Connor’s eyes were like ice. “Mrs. Gibson, I think you know perfectly well what you’ve done.”
