Lucinda’s words hung in the air, heavy with meaning.
“Lucinda? Are you saying she actually likes Elliot?”
“Leila, we don’t even go to the same school. I only see her on weekends, and honestly, you know we don’t get along. But I do know one thing. Elliot would never fall for her, not in a million years.”
Leila had always felt like something was off between Lydia and Elliot, but when she saw Lydia spending time with Connor, she let herself relax. Now, hearing Lucinda say this, all her old worries rushed back.
In Leila’s mind, Lydia suddenly became the type of girl who couldn’t stick to one guy, always flirting and keeping things messy.
“Lucinda, how can she be so shameless? First, she goes after Connor, and now she’s trying to get with Elliot too? What’s next, Blake and Arthur? Are your parents just going to let this keep happening?”
Leila’s voice rose, her frustration obvious.
Lucinda secretly loved watching everyone turn against Lydia. She let out a sigh, her tone full of helplessness and hurt. “Leila, what can I even do? My parents treat her like their own daughter now. They give her everything she wants, like she’s the most precious thing in the world. And Connor… he’s already completely under her spell.”
“What? It’s really gotten that bad?”
“You and Louise saw it too, right? What can I possibly do?” Lucinda’s voice started to tremble and she began to cry quietly on the phone, making Leila believe her even more.
Leila was stunned. “How could your parents be so clueless? And how could Connor do this to you? You’re supposed to be his fiancée!”
Lucinda let out a bitter laugh. “Does it even matter? We barely saw each other growing up, and now he’s suddenly all about Lydia. What’s the point of an engagement now?”
