As Lydia stepped away from the operating table and headed for the door, Dr. Simpson finally couldn’t hold back. He moved right in front of her, bowed deeply, and said, “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize how skilled you were. Your abilities are truly amazing. May I ask your name?”
With talent like that, Dr. Simpson couldn’t help but show his respect. He had never met anyone so young with such extraordinary skills. He used to think Dr. Hady and Garrett were the brightest young stars in medicine, but now he realized Lydia was on a whole different level.
Lydia answered, calm and unbothered, “Lydia.”
Dr. Simpson watched her go, repeating her name in his mind. He was sure he’d never heard it before. Someone this talented, and yet, her name was nowhere in the medical world.
As soon as Lydia changed out of her scrubs and pushed open the operating room door, she saw Lucinda rushing toward her. Lucinda’s face was pale and streaked with tears, her voice shaking as she yelled, “Lydia! You killed Grandpa! You did it on purpose!”
She raised her hand, ready to slap Lydia, but Lydia’s eyes went cold. She caught Lucinda’s wrist in one quick move and, with a flick, sent her stumbling backward. Lucinda never expected someone as slim as Lydia to be that strong. She lost her balance and landed on the floor, stunned.
“The one who almost killed him was you, not me.” Lydia’s voice was cold and steady.
Cameron and Kylie moved in, both with red, swollen eyes. Kylie could barely get her words out through her sobs. “Lydia, your grandpa… is he really gone?”
Cameron wiped the tears from his face, still in shock. “I can’t believe it happened so suddenly…”
Lydia frowned. “Who told you he was gone?”
So when Lydia walked out right after that, they were sure the worst had happened.
“The surgery was a success. He’s fine,” Lydia said, glancing at Lucinda, who was still sitting on the floor, staring at her in disbelief. “But he needs to be monitored in the ICU for four hours. If nothing happens, he can move to a regular room.”
Cameron and Kylie stared at her, completely stunned. Tears of relief filled their eyes.
“Lydia, you… you really saved Grandpa?” Cameron couldn’t believe it. His own daughter had just pulled off a miracle. Just a few hours ago, Dr. Simpson and Dr. Hady said things looked grim, that even with surgery, there was only a fifty percent chance. But Lydia had gone in and brought Grandpa back from the edge in just two hours.
Lydia nodded. “It was close. If he eats anything he shouldn’t again, I can’t promise I’ll be able to save him next time.”
