He definitely went home with Lydia. Lucinda was so mad she could barely breathe. Her phone rang again. This time it was Grace.
As soon as Lucinda picked up, Grace’s soft, caring voice floated over. “Lucinda, are you done with school? I made your favorite food. Why don’t you come have some before heading home?”
Lucinda didn’t hesitate for a second. The driver hadn’t come for her, and Garrett had left with Lydia. Whatever, she thought, she just wouldn’t go home tonight.
When she got to Grace’s tiny apartment, Lucinda looked around and couldn’t hide her disdain. “Grace, this place is way too small. Let me help you out with some money. You should really move somewhere nicer.”
She stepped into the cramped room, glanced at the old furniture, and instantly lost her appetite. Grace knew Lucinda had grown up pampered, and it was obvious she wasn’t used to places like this.
“Lucinda, this is the closest place to your school. It’s easier for me to look after you here. I’m fine, really. You keep your money. Sit down, I’ll get you some soup.”
But Lucinda shook her head. “No, that’s okay, Grace. I just wanted to check in on you. I’m not hungry, I don’t feel like eating.”
Grace watched her for a moment, then asked quietly, “Lucinda, are you upset? Did someone make you angry?”
Lucinda had always vented to Grace. Now, hearing her ask, she couldn’t hold back. “Garrett has been working at Capital Med School lately. Today I called to ask if he could pick me up, but he said he was out of town for work. I heard Lydia’s voice in the background. He just didn’t want to pick me up.”
She finished with a mix of anger and hurt. “It’s all Lydia’s fault. Ever since she came back, everyone’s changed. It’s like she’s cast some kind of spell—everyone’s always around her, and no one cares how I feel.”
Grace frowned, just as upset. “How could Garrett treat you like this? He used to care about you so much. What’s gotten into him?”
“It’s Lydia! She never should have come back.” Lucinda couldn’t hide her bitterness.
