Lydia scoffed under her breath and walked off without looking back.
Leila was seething. “Lydia, don’t you walk away from me! I want a rematch!”
Lydia didn’t even pause. “Not interested.”
Leila nearly lost it. She started to lunge after Lydia, but Paige held her arm, stopping her.
“Leila, just let it go.”
That only made Leila angrier. “Paige, you’re not the one who got slapped! Of course you can be calm about it!”
Paige frowned, clearly worried. “I get that you’re mad, but I think Lydia was hinting at something. Don’t you think there’s more going on here?”
“Hinting at what? She’s just full of herself, that’s all. No wonder Lucinda got bullied so badly by her. Lydia is completely shameless.”
Leila’s hands balled into fists. Her urge to put Lydia in her place only grew stronger.
Today, she’d dragged Paige along because she and Lucinda had planned it all out. She wanted to challenge Lydia to a violin duel. Lydia thought she was so great at everything. Well, Leila was a prodigy, with a shelf full of national awards. She was ready to embarrass Lydia, show her up in front of everyone. But she hadn’t expected Lydia to be so arrogant.
“Leila, have you ever thought about it? Lydia’s just supposed to be the Norwood family’s goddaughter. How could she have so much power? And she told us to ask Lucinda who the real Norwood daughter is. What do you think she meant by that?”
Paige had always found the Norwood family’s attitude toward Lydia odd. They treated her like their own. No matter what Lydia did, they let it slide. If she was just a goddaughter, why would they let her steal their actual daughter’s fiancé? None of it made sense.
But Leila was too angry to care about logic. All she could think about was how Lydia had slapped her. She wanted to pay her back, ten times over.
As Lydia left the school gates, she spotted a familiar black luxury car parked front and center.
For a second, she wondered if she was seeing things, but then she caught the flashy license plate. No mistake, it was Connor’s car.
