Lucinda sat there with her hands squeezed together, tears swimming in her eyes. “I get it, Mom, Dad. I’ll learn from Lydia from now on. I only told my friends she was your adopted daughter because I had no choice. Lydia didn’t want anyone to know about her real identity, and I just let it slip. I never thought they’d judge her like that. I’ll apologize to her, I promise, but I don’t know if she’ll forgive me…”
Kylie reached over, gently rubbing Lucinda’s head. “Your sister knows her own mind. It’s getting late. Get some sleep, and we can talk more in the morning.”
Lucinda had expected Kylie and Cameron to reassure her, to promise that Lydia would forgive her no matter what. That way, if Lydia didn’t accept her apology, it would make Lydia look unreasonable and childish.
But Kylie and Cameron didn’t take the bait.
Lucinda nodded weakly. “I’m sorry for making you worry tonight. You should both get some rest too.”
As soon as Cameron and Kylie left, Lucinda’s sad, helpless look vanished. Her eyes turned cold and sharp.
Good thing she’d thought ahead. If not, Lydia would have found a way to kick her out of the Norwood family for sure. But now, their parents’ attention was back on her. Lydia wouldn’t be able to drag her down so easily.
Outside the room, Kylie and Cameron exchanged a look and walked down the hall to Lydia’s door. They saw right through Lucinda’s act, but still, she was the daughter they had raised. They couldn’t just kicking her out now. However, it wasn’t fair to Lydia.
Kylie knocked softly. “Lydia?”
Lydia was about to take a shower, but when she heard the knock, she came to open the door. She saw Kylie and Cameron standing there, looking awkward and hesitant, and instantly understood what they wanted to say.
“I get it. You don’t have to explain.”
Kylie and Cameron both felt a wave of guilt and admiration for Lydia’s maturity.
