At this point, Li Dai sighed and continued:
"Actually, the majority of people in China, just like you, still approach problems with old feudal thinking. That’s why China has never been able to develop. The people of F Country have open minds, which is why F Country is many years more advanced than China!"
Ni Yang looked up at Li Dai, her tone indifferent, "Mr. Li, foreign cultures certainly have their merits, but the act of belittling one’s own culture to elevate another’s will only be met with ridicule. Here we are in F Country, and you represent not just yourself. Your every word and action also represent China."
What is cultural cringe?
Ni Yang thought Li Dai was the very definition of cultural cringe, having sipped a few drops of Western ink, he had forgotten his own surname.
"Miss Ni, don’t you think your way of thinking is very old-fashioned?" Li Dai frowned.
He found communicating with someone so limited in their thinking very difficult.
It was clearly Ni Yang who was too conservative, yet she thought it was his problem.
Moreover, when had he ever belittled China?
What he said was the truth.
Ni Yang continued: "I already have a boyfriend, shouldn’t I keep my distance from Mr. Li? Do you think it’s good to have an ambiguous relationship? Look at it from another angle, if you, Mr. Li, had a girlfriend, would you want her to live under the same roof as another man? And this man had pursued your girlfriend before."
Li Dai was taken aback.
He had never thought about this question.
Ni Yang went on: "If one does not know to keep a distance from other men despite having a boyfriend, and even lives under the same roof with another single man in an ambiguous manner, that’s not called being open-minded; that’s called being a flirt."
"Chinese culture is profound and comprehensive; our ancestors also left us many principles about how to conduct ourselves. Mr. Li should not abandon his own country’s culture in his eagerness to absorb foreign cultures."
"If someone uninformed saw what’s going on, they might think Mr. Li is a cultural cringe ’banana’ person."
Ni Yang did not reject foreign cultures, for indeed there were many aspects of them worth learning from.
But one should not be so taken with foreign cultures as to become blind to domestic ones. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
Every country has its strengths as well as its flaws.
One should extract the essence and discard the dross.
Li Dai opened his mouth, his face flashing alternately between pale and flushed.
