Chapter 108
LILITH
Her reaction made my lips curl in mockery.
“Daring enough to do it, but too much of a coward to admit it? What a disappointment.”
She flinched at my words, her eyes darting everywhere but at me.
The mockery in my gaze deepened as I leaned forward.
“I don’t believe that after everything that’s happened to you lately, you still haven’t suspected that something went wrong somewhere.” I paused deliberately, watching how her face stiffened. “In fact, isn’t that why you called me here? To test whether I’ve started hating you–and if that’s the reason the luck you stole began turning against you? Or am I wrong?”
In an instant, a storm of emotions flickered across her face–unease, fear, confusion–until finally, it settled on one.
Urgency.
She looked at me, her eyes wide with hope. “But you still don’t hate me, do you? You still consider me your friend, right?”
At her words, I couldn’t even summon amusement. All I felt was how utterly ridiculous this all
was.
“After everything you’ve done, where exactly do you get the confidence to ask that question?” My tone dropped low, almost a whisper. “Let me guess…” I tapped my temple lightly. “…that thing in your head?”
The moment the words left my mouth, I saw her pupils dilate–horror blooming in her eyes like I’d peeled back her last layer of secrecy.
I smiled, though it held no trace of warmth. “You don’t really think that thing is as powerful as it claimed, do you?” I leaned closer to the glass partition. “Then let me tell you the truth–it’s nothing but a corrupted system.”
“A defective product that was meant to be destroyed, but somehow escaped to this world and bound itself to you by sheer chance.

Claire’s face went chalk white, but she still clung to her delusions.

“You’re lying. It’s the most powerful system in the universe–and I.” her eyes burned with manic light. “am the chosen one! Since the day it bonded with me, everything has gone perfectly. Every wish I ever had came true without me even trying!”
Because you stole my luck to fuel your own.
The thought flashed through my mind, but there was no point saying it aloud.
Even now–with her mask shattered and all her lies and secrets laid bare–she still didn’t understand what she’d done wrong.
There wasn’t a trace of remorse in her eyes.
“It’s been hibernating for a while now, hasn’t it?” I asked flatly. “Completely unresponsive?”
“But do you know why?”
“Of course,” she said quickly, a smug smile flickering in her eyes. “It has important duties in the interstellar realm. So it’s busy–too busy to answer to me all the time.”
That thing really is a good liar, I thought.
I sighed, looking at her with feigned pity. “No, you’re wrong. That’s just its excuse. The truth is, because it’s a corrupted and barely functional system, it needs an astronomical amount of luck to repair itself.”
“But it can’t gather that luck on its own. It needs a vessel to collect it, and once it is enough, it’ll drain that vessel dry.”
My gaze hardened. “And the vessel it chose… was you.”
“Impossible!” Claire shrieked, her voice cracking. “You’re lying! You’re just jealous of me- jealous of what I have!”
I didn’t answer immediately, my gaze flicking to the door behind her; that outburst was loud enough to draw attention.
Sure enough, a moment later, the door swung open, and a female guard with stern features stepped in, her tone clipped.
“Keep it down, Brooks, or this visitation ends now.
The effect was instant. Claire’s mouth snapped shut like someone had cut her voice off.

Seems she’s had quite the ‘training‘ this past week, I thought dryly.
Satisfied, the guard gave her one last stern look before closing the door again.
“You have ten minutes left.” she added before leaving.
I decided to make good use of them.

Looking at Claire’s subdued form, I sneered softly. “You think I’m jealous of you? You’ve got it backwards.”
“It’s you who’s always been jealous of me–my family, my background, my appearance, the people around me… everything I had. Yet you never had the courage to admit it. And that,” I said coldly, “makes you even more pathetic.”
“That’s not true…” she shook her head like a rattle, her voice trembling. “I’m not-”
Then, all of a sudden, she stopped mid–sentence, appearing thoughtful with her head still tilted, as if something just clicked.
Slowly, her gaze snapped back to me, her grip tightening around the receiver until her knuckles turned white.
“You stole my system, didn’t you?” she whispered hoarsely.
Her expression twisted, eyes wide and wild. “That’s how you know everything about me! That’s why everything started falling apart! And now you’re feeding me with lies because you’re afraid I‘ 11 take it back!”
Her voice rose, growing shriller with each word. “That’s it, isn’t it?! You’re trying to stop me from fighting for what’s mine!”
For a moment, I just stared at her, my expression confused and stunned.
Then, as her words spiraled into incoherence, I understood.
She’s lost it. Completely.
That meant there was nothing left to say.
“This conversation is over,” I said quietly into the receiver.
“No! Don’t you dare hang up, Lilith!” she screamed, her voice cracking. “Not before you return my system to me! I’m the chosen one–the only one! GIVE IT BACK!”

She shot to her feet, letting go of the receiver and leaving it to swing wildly as she slammed both palms against the glass.
The sound echoed through the booth, desperate and hollow.
I didn’t flinch.
Calmly, I set my receiver back on its cradle and rose to my feet just as the guard burst in again, her expression thunderous.
I watched silently as she restrained Claire, who was still thrashing and shouting with red, frantic
eyes.
Then I turned, smoothed down my sleeve, and walked toward the door.
The show was over.
Nothing left to see.
