If I truly wanted to reclaim my fate, then how could I let a “little” company like this intimidate me?
With this boost in confidence, I walked straight in, but as I approached the front desk, my nerves returned with my steps slowing down.
Still, I didn’t stop. I couldn’t back down now.
“How may I help you, miss?” the receptionist asked with a professional smile. She had chestnut hair and a warm, calming presence.
I secretly exhaled softly before replying. “I’m here to see Freya. She’s an editor at FeatherInk Comics.”
“Do you have an appointment?”
I nodded. “Yes. At ten o’clock.”
“Your name, please?” she asked, glancing at the computer screen in front of her.
“Lilith Caldwell,” I said, then hesitated. “But I think she’ll better recognize me as… Longing Bird.”
The receptionist’s head snapped up so fast that I flinched. Her eyes widened in disbelief, and then she began speaking in a rush.
“You are Longing Bird? As in THE Longing Bird? FeatherInk Comics‘ Longing Bird?”
“Yes,” I said slowly, watching her carefully as I took an instinctive step back.
“Holy crap!” she gasped. Then, realizing where she was–a pubic space and her workplace–she slapped a hand over
her mouth.

Even so, her eyes still sparkled with giddy excitement.
“… Is there something wrong?” I asked, anxiety creeping in, whispering that this might actually be a scam after all.
Although it seemed unlikely…
“N–no, nothing’s wrong!” she blurted out, shaking her head like a work.”

She beamed with joy. “I can’t believe I’m meeting you in person. If the others find out, they’ll be so jealous.”
I… have a fan?
And apparently… others, too?

Chapter 44
I stared at the young woman in front of me, the weight of her words not quite settling in.
Whatever expression I wore must have been strange, because her smile slowly began to fade.
“Did I… scare you?” she asked hesitantly.

“No. You didn’t,” I said, waving my hand and shaking my head. “I guess I’m just… surprised. And maybe not used to
it.”
She looked relieved, patting her chest with exaggerated relief.
Just then, a hesitant voice called out from behind, “Longing Bird?”
I turned instinctively and met the gaze of a beautiful, short–haired young woman, in a peach mid–length dress and black–rimmed glasses.
The uncertain look in her eyes–combined with the fact that barely anyone should know I, or rather Longing Bird, was coming today–made it easy to guess who she was.
“Freya?” I asked.
Her eyes lit up instantly, and she walked toward us.
Meanwhile, I noticed the receptionist–my fan–had gone noticeably still, her earlier excitement nowhere to be seen.
With her head slightly bowed, she greeted softly, “Miss Freya.”
She fidgeted, visibly anxious, probably for having let her excitement show too openly in front of a guest.
I was about to speak up in her defense when Freya turned to her with a serious expression. “Maggie, I know you’re excited about seeing your idol in real life, but…”
So her name was Maggie, I noted absentmindedly, and from Freya’s tone, it was clear she was truly a genuine fan.
But did Freya plan to scold her?
“…what if you scare her off with your enthusiasm?”
To my surprise, Freya finished with a chuckle, her amused eyes twinkling as she took in our startled expressions.
Then, just as I thought that was it, her face turned serious. “I’ll let you off this one time. But next time, no matter how excited you are, remember the setting you’re in.”
“As the entire building’s first point of contact with the public, you can’t let the company’s image be compromised be- cause of you. Do you understand?”
Maggie’s expression tightened with guilt. “Yes, Miss Freya. It won’t happen again.”
At her promise, Freya’s lips curved faintly before turning to me and gesturing toward the elevator.

“I’ll show you around, Longing Bird.”
I nodded, then turned to Maggie with a sincere smile. “Thank you for supporting my work. It’s an honor to have fans like you.”
“N–No. We should be the ones thanking you,” she said flusteredly, waving her hands. “You create such beautiful sto-
ries.”
Then she glanced at Freya, hesitating. “Um… can I ask her one question? Just one?”
Freya gave a small nod.
“Can we expect updates for The Heiress’s Comeback and Aphrodite’s Love soon?”
The hope and expectation shining in her eyes… it was impossible to ignore.
Even if I hadn’t originally planned to continue those stories, seeing that look–so genuine, so earnest–I couldn’t bring myself to say no.
A smile spread across my face as I gave her a quiet but firm answer.
“Yes.”
Her joy was instantaneous and contagious. She even did a small fist pump before remembering herself.
