Chapter 11

“Reporters?” Heather looked toward Howard, who had just got home, and asked, “Did you bring them here?”

Howard paused for a moment, then replied impatiently, “These paparazzi are everywhere. I just took Yvette to the company today, and now they’re already on our trail.”

He turned to Sophia, who was still focused on her pasta, and raised his chin. “Sophia, I signed up for a reality show. They’ll be filming at our place in a few days. Make sure to stay out of sight when they arrive.”

Sophia continued eating, completely ignoring him.

Howard kept talking, mostly to himself. “It’s not that I don’t want you on camera—it’s just that you’re not exactly camera–ready. Yet you still dream about competing with Yvette. It’s pathetic, really. All you’re good at is making a scene to get noticed.”

Sophia took the last bite and wiped her mouth. “Hey, idiot, can you just see how clueless you are? You’re like an annoying fly buzzing around me. Are you gonna pay me for triggering my hatred of stupidity?”

Howard’s expression darkened. “Sophia, I dare you to say that again.”

Sophia chuckled, crossing her arms with a smirk. She tilted her chin up defiantly. “Wow, that’s a first. Alright, you’re an idiot, a moron, a waste of space, and trash.”

“You!” Howard was so furious that he felt like throwing a punch at her.

Yvette quickly intervened, glancing at Sophia. “Howard, Sophia, let’s not argue for now. What about the reporters outside?”

Irritation bubbled up in Howard’s chest. “Those paparazzi are as annoying as some people.”

Sophia, about to head upstairs, paused and turned to the servant who was clearing the dishes. “Who took my kitchen knife?”

The servant’s hand trembled. “I–I don’t know.”

Howard’s expression changed, and he suddenly decided it was better to keep quiet.

“Coward.” Sophia shot him a disdainful sneer, then turned on her heel and marched upstairs.

Howard’s face darkened. He glared at her retreating back, wishing he could burn a hole right through her with his stare.

After a while, he turned to Yvette. “Come with me, Yvette. The paparazzi spotted us together. If we don’t explain, they’ll spin some crazy story.

“Anyway, the reality show crew is coming to our place in a few days to film. Everyone will know you’re my sister by then. Consider this as an early introduction,” he said, taking her hand and leading her out.

“Howard…” Yvette hesitated, glancing nervously at the reporters. Something felt weird, but before she could put her finger on it, Howard grabbed her arm and pulled her outside.

As they appeared, the reporters outside the big iron gate erupted in excitement and quickly trained their cameras on them.

“Howard? Why is he here?”

“He came out with a girl!”

“Could this be Howard’s home?”

“Wait, the top STEM student this year also has the last name Chandler.

Could she be Howard’s sister?”

“This is huge. Hurry and record it!”

“Record? Forget that. Start a livestream.”

As Howard and Yvette drew near, an eager reporter called out, “Howard, is the young lady with you this year’s top STEM student, Sophia?”

Howard’s smile vanished instantly. He stepped forward and grabbed the reporter’s collar. “What did you just say? Sophia is the top STEM student?”

Howard jabbed a finger at her, his face contorted with rage. “Did you do this on purpose to embarrass me?”

Sophia shrugged and yawned, refusing to engage.

Heather looked anxious. “Howard, what are you talking about? What happened to Yvette? Make sense, will you?”

Howard’s face darkened like he’d just suffered the worst blow of his life. His bloodshot eyes burned with rage.

“Mom,” he said, “Sophia scored a 1,574 on her SATs and topped the STEM rankings. Those reporters outside were here for her. But she just stood by and let Yvette and me look like total idiots.”

Howard took a deep breath and turned to Sophia. “How could you be so mean?”

The moment he finished, Sophia kicked him square in the stomach.

A dull thud echoed as Howard fell to his knees, clutching his stomach and

groaning in pain.

Sophia yanked his hair, forcing his head up. She tapped his cheek and smiled, “Forgot the lesson from last time already?

“With your tone–deaf singing, clumsy moves, lack of coordination, and that underdeveloped brain of yours, it’s unbelievable they kept you until the final round of the audition.

“You’re utterly worthless—a complete waste of space. Just living under the same roof as you feels like bad luck.

“You show off your looks and connections outside, undermine your teammates, and leech off their resources. Then you come home and trash- talk me like some crazy drama queen. Honestly, even barking dogs sound better than you.

“Can you do anything right? LOSER!”
