Upon hearing the name Qianqian, the old man looked utterly incredulous.
He seemed to find it hard to believe that Gong Chen knew this name.
"How... how do you know?"
"Who is she?" Gong Chen looked at the old man coldly.
"... "
The old man said nothing and turned his back to Lin Zhiyi and Gong Chen.
Refusing to answer the question with his actions.
Gong Chen directly asked, "Does the Xia Family’s bankruptcy have anything to do with you?"
Upon hearing the name of the Xia Family, the old man frowned deeply, and the hands behind his back clenched tighter and tighter.
Gong Chen, thinking about how the old man’s affairs might harm Lin Zhiyi and Xingxing, felt a more terrifying gloom.
"Why should others bear the mistakes you made?"
Hearing this, the old man was moved.
He retorted, "No, it’s not like that..."
"Then how is it?" Gong Chen questioned.
"I..."
There was some guilt in the old man’s eyes.
Another long silence ensued.
Lin Zhiyi tugged at Gong Chen and stepped forward, saying, "Old man, do you remember that the Xia Family left behind two daughters who have now been found? They lived poorly after leaving Jing City back then."
"Impossible," the old man retorted, "Lin Zhiyi, don’t try to deceive me."
Lin Zhiyi thought for a moment and looked at Gong Chen.
Gong Chen nodded slightly, then took a step back.
Lin Zhiyi took out a photo of Xia’s mother.
"After leaving Jing City, she returned to her hometown, Lan City, but died not long after because she fell ill and didn’t receive treatment. People around her even spread rumors that she had a shameful illness, and her two children were shunned by relatives. The elder sister had no choice but to take her younger sister to an orphanage to survive."
"Old man, do you really not remember her?"
After speaking, she slowly handed the photo to the old man.
The old man stared at the photo and took it with trembling hands.
He gently caressed the person in the photo, shaking his head, "It’s not like this. It shouldn’t be like this."
"Then how should it be?" Gong Chen asked, "They’ve already found trouble with us now."
The old man turned to look at Gong Chen, "Impossible."
He kept repeating the same few words.
Lin Zhiyi could only take out a current photo of Xia Wan.
"It’s her. She deliberately appeared before us looking like the old madam, then secretly made trouble. Old man, if you know anything, please tell us truthfully."
Upon seeing the photo of Xia Wan, the old man became confused again and directly hid behind the table.
"She’s here! She’s here! Run! Run!"
He stared at Lin Zhiyi, his eyes no longer showing disdain but genuinely urging her to leave.
Gong Chen wanted to say something, but Lin Zhiyi raised her hand to stop him.
"Old man, if you have any issues, contact us again. We’ll leave now."
"Go." The old man stood behind the table and slowly spoke.
Lin Zhiyi pulled Gong Chen out of the room.
"The old man’s emotions are quite off."
Gong Chen silently nodded, "Indeed strange. When he saw Xia Wan’s photo, he showed no surprise or curiosity, as if he’d seen her before."
"Could he have mistaken her for your mother?" Lin Zhiyi speculated.
"Having been married for decades, could he really not tell?" Gong Chen questioned.
Lin Zhiyi didn’t know how to answer for a moment.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a familiar figure.
"Xia Wan?"
Lin Zhiyi turned and chased after her, but upon reaching the elevator, she found no one there.
Gong Chen caught up.
"What’s wrong?"
"I think I saw Xia Wan. She was still wearing a nurse’s uniform," Lin Zhiyi uncertainly said.
Just then, a nurse walked by.
Lin Zhiyi corrected, "Not a nurse, the uniform is more blueish."
Gong Chen calmly said, "It’s an orderly."
