Chapter 30
He stood firm, blocking the narrow alleyway, his gaze locking onto my face before darting to Serena, who was panting heavily just behind me.
With a sudden, brutal grip, he seized my wrist, his fingers digging into my skin like iron bands. “Norah! Don’t trust her. Stay away. She’s consumed by jealousy—she can’t bear to see you succeed. Every time you make progress, she tries to tear it all down. She plays the victim, but behind your back, she’s stabbing you in the heart!”
I struggled to pull free, but his hold was unyielding.
“Damian, I didn’t—”
“Silence, Serena! If I find out you’ve told Norah anything you shouldn’t have, you’ll regret ever being born!”
Serena shrank back, her body trembling with fear as she pressed herself into the shadowed corner.
“Damian, are you out of your mind? Let me go!” I glared at him, struggling harder.
To my horror, my resistance seemed to delight him. A twisted smirk spread across his face as he tightened his grip, making me wince in pain, feeling as if my bones might snap under the pressure.
“Yes, I’m insane! Norah, I’m madly in love with you. I can’t stand the thought of losing you. Look around—Lucien can’t save you this time. You need me, not him.”
Before I could gather my thoughts, a black van silently rolled up at the alley’s entrance, blocking any escape.
“Let me go, Damian! What are you doing?” I shouted, panic rising in my chest.
His eyes suddenly chilled, and without warning, his other hand shot up, striking the back of my neck with a sharp, brutal blow.
Pain exploded through my skull, dizziness washed over me, and the world around me blurred and twisted.
The last images burned into my mind were Damian’s wild, determined eyes and Serena’s terrified face.
I lost track of time.
When I finally came to, I realized I couldn’t move.
—
My wrists and ankles were tightly bound with rough, coarse rope that bit into my skin, leaving painful red marks.
I lay sprawled on a narrow bed beneath a dim, flickering yellow bulb hanging from the ceiling, casting long shadows across the cold, bare room.
Turning my head with effort, I saw Serena tied to a nearby sofa, her eyes shut, her body still and silent.
Where was I?
Panic surged as I struggled against the bindings, but the harder I pulled, the deeper the rope cut, nearly slicing into my flesh.
Cold sweat drenched my back as I forced myself to breathe slowly, trying to calm the rising tide of fear.
Outside the grimy window, the sky was darkening, the evening creeping in.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed outside the door—steady, deliberate.
I closed my eyes, slowed my breathing, and feigned sleep.
The door creaked open, footsteps entered and paused beside the bed.
I felt his burning gaze settle on me, lingering far too long before he moved to check Serena on the sofa.
Then he returned to my side.
My palms grew clammy with fear as he said softly, “Stop pretending, Norah. I know you’re awake.”
It was Damian.
I held my breath, keeping perfectly still, but he chuckled quietly, the faint clink of metal sounding as he picked something up.
A knife? A needle? My scalp tingled with unease, but I kept my eyes shut tight.
Then a cold object touched my lips, a faintly sweet taste lingering as he tried to pry my mouth open.
I clenched my teeth, refusing to give in.
He tried again and again, applying more pressure, but I held firm, lips pressed tightly shut.
“Norah, you’re still so stubborn,” he murmured, finally giving up.
I heard him turn and footsteps fade away, as if he was leaving the room.
—
Suddenly, I gasped awake, my heart pounding wildly, threatening to burst from my chest.
My eyes darted to the bedside table, where only a lonely glass of water sat.
Moments later, he returned, settling heavily on the bed beside me.
Without warning, he grabbed my chin with a painful grip, forcing my mouth open.
Before I could protest, he shoved a small pill inside and poured cold water down my throat.
I choked and coughed violently, tears stinging my eyes, glaring at him with burning anger.
