Chapter 42

Norah’s Perspective

Lucien’s usual calm demeanor shattered completely in an instant.

“Are you begging for death?” he bellowed, his voice raw with rage as he grabbed Damian by the hair, yanking his head back before violently slamming his face against the cold, unforgiving wall.

The sickening thud echoed through the narrow alley, making me flinch involuntarily.

“Lucien! Please, stop!” I cried out, rushing forward in a desperate attempt to pull him away, but my efforts were futile against his fury.

Damian, despite the blood streaming down his face and the pain written all over his expression, let out a manic laugh. “Did I say something wrong?” he sneered, his voice dripping with madness.

He spat out venomous words that cut deeper than any wound. “She was nothing but a cheap whore! Probably raped and murdered, left to rot in some forgotten ditch! And you, you poor fool, have been chasing after her ghost all these years…!”

Lucien’s fist collided with Damian’s face with brutal force. The impact was merciless, snapping Damian’s head sideways as he crumpled to the ground, unconscious.

In the distance, the sharp wail of police sirens grew louder, closing in fast.

“The police are coming! Lucien, you have to stop!” I grabbed his arm urgently.

“Lucien, listen to me!” I pleaded, my voice trembling. “Killing him would be too kind. We need him alive—he has to suffer, to be destroyed from the inside out. That’s the only way to truly avenge everything he’s done!”

Lucien’s heavy breaths filled the tense silence, his eyes burning with pain and fury. The pounding footsteps of the approaching officers echoed nearer.

“Come with me. Now!” I urged, pulling him by the arm.

Without hesitation, we slipped out through the other end of the alley, disappearing into the shadows just as the police arrived.

Inside the car, Lucien remained silent, his foot pressing hard on the accelerator as if trying to outrun the storm inside him. I watched his jaw clenched tight, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel—his rage far from spent.

Back at the apartment, Lucien headed straight to the bar, grabbing a bottle of whiskey without a word. He took a long, harsh swallow, as if trying to drown the turmoil within.

“Lucien, please don’t do this,” I said softly, stepping closer to take the bottle from him.

He recoiled, taking another deep gulp before slamming the bottle down on the counter with a sharp thud.

“You’re right, Norah,” he finally admitted, voice rough. “I can’t let him die that easily. But I can’t just let this go either. I need to uncover the truth about my mother. And I can’t stand him lurking so close to you.”

I moved closer and wrapped my arms around him. “Lucien, I’m here. We’ll get through this together, no matter what.”

For a long moment, his body remained stiff against mine before finally relaxing. He turned and held me tightly, seeking comfort in my embrace.

The next day, Eleanor’s counterattack hit like a tidal wave.

Headlines screamed from every tabloid and online source:

[Society Secrets: The Mother of Constantine Eldest Son Was a Promiscuous Socialite Who Eloped for Love?]

[Shocking! Lucien Constantine’s Mother Allegedly Involved in Massive Fraud, Fled with Money!]

[Insider Reveals: History of Mental Illness in Lucien’s Maternal Line, Mother May Have Disappeared Due to Psychotic Break!]

One article after another, accompanied by grainy, faded photographs of Lucien’s mother, painted her in the vilest terms—promiscuous, greedy, mentally unstable. Each report was a calculated strike aimed directly at Lucien’s heart.

I hurried into the study to find Lucien standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, his eyes fixed on his phone. The screen displayed an old photo of his mother, surrounded by cruel, hateful comments.

I wrapped my arms around him from behind. “Lucien, don’t look. It’s all Eleanor’s dirty work.”

He didn’t turn to face me, but his voice was hoarse when he spoke. “Some of it… is true.”

My heart froze.

“My mother… she did leave because of another man,” he said quietly, the pain in his voice unmistakable. “But I never thought she’d abandon me for him.”
