I didn’t slow down.

Strong arms wrapped around me from behind, jerking me to a stop.

I fought, kicking and twisting, but the grip was iron.

Norah! Stop! You can’t go in there!

Lucien’s voice was rough in my ear, strained with smoke and fear.

Let me go!I screamed, beating my fists against his chest.

Tears blurred my vision, mixing with ash and sweat.

The manuscriptit’s all I have left of her! It’s in there!

Damian!Lucien shouted over my head.

He was stronger, pinning my arms to my sides.

Hold her here! Don’t let her move!

Then he let me go.

Just like that.

He turned and sprinted straight into the mouth of the inferno.

The fire swallowed him whole.

I watched his figure disappear into the wall of flame and choking black smoke.

My heart stopped. The world went silent.

All sound fadedthe sirens, the roaring fire, Damian’s pleading behind me.

All I saw was his back, walking into hell.

I can’t lose him.

The truth hit me, clean and cruel.

It didn’t matter what had happened between us before.

None of it mattered.

I couldn’t lose this man.

Norah, please, don’t,Damian begged, his hands firm on my shoulders, holding me back.

I didn’t even realize I was still trying to run.

The fire roared like a living beast.

Distant sirens wailed, but they felt hours away.

I couldn’t wait. I had to go in. I struggled against Damian’s hold.

Then, a shadow moved in the fire.

A figure stumbled out of the flames, clutching a small, scorched metal box.

He took two steps and collapsed at my feet.

Lucien!

I fell to my knees, my hands flying to his face.

His forearm was badly burned, the skin angry and red.

His face was black with soot, his breathing a ragged, choking gasp.

He shoved the hot box into my arms.

His eyes rolled back. His head fell against the ground. He went limp.

I clutched the box and looked down at his ashstreaked face.

Tears streamed down my own, cutting clean paths through the grime.

In that moment, every wall between us crumbled.

Every doubt turned to ash, blown away by the firestorm.

The hospital room smelled sharply of antiseptic and silence.

Lucien had burns and smoke inhalation. The doctors said he’d have to stay at least overnight.

I sat in the stiff chair beside his bed, watching the slow, steady rise and fall of his chest.

Fear and gratitude warred inside me, a dizzying cocktail that left me breathless.

I lifted his uninjured hand, the one not wrapped in thick bandages, and pressed it to my cheek.

It was warm. Alive.
