Chapter 73

Adrienne had always been insecure, and after being betrayed and falsely accused, she was also labeled a thief.

When money and belongings went missing from the dorm next door, Adrienne was blamed, leading to her being expelled. In the end, depression took hold, and she tragically took her own life.

But instead of feeling remorse, those two women went to Adrienne’s funeral, where they managed to make her mother so upset she ended up in the hospital, later dying of a heart attack, following her daughter.

These were the things Valerie had heard about, though she didn’t know the full details.

However, Adrienne was a good girl–kind and shy. It was utterly unfair for such a wonderful person to be trampled upon like this.

Valerie thought for a moment and then said, “Let’s wait for them to come back. Come on, let’s grab something to eat.”

Adrienne happily agreed.

But when they arrived at the most expensive restaurant near campus, Adrienne hesitated. “Valerie, have you made a fortune recently? You’re actually willing to come to a place like this?”

Valerie smiled. “It’s fine. I have the money now. I can afford a meal.”

“Wow,” Adrienne’s eyes sparkled with surprise. She knew Valerie wasn’t the type to show off, but she wasn’t one to take advantage either. “Next time, I’ll treat you, but I have to wait for my article fee first.”

“Alright.”

Valerie confidently ordered several of her favorites, as well as a few items that Adrienne had eyed but didn’t dare to order.

The table soon filled with dishes. Adrienne swallowed nervously and said, “I’m going to dig in.”

“Hey, isn’t that Adrienne?”

A young voice, sharp yet familiar, called out.

Valerie turned and couldn’t help but laugh.

What a coincidence. It was none other than one of their roommates, Jasmine Duncan.

Jasmine, arm linked with a young man, stared at Valerie with wide, almost unbelieving eyes. “Valerie?”

Jasmine’s boyfriend was instantly captivated by Valerie, his gaze fixed on her.

Valerie was used to such attention and simply said, “Long time no see.”

Jasmine’s eyes practically bulged out. “How did you suddenly get so beautiful?”

Valerie had once been just like Jasmine–shy and introverted. She had no confidence and didn’t carry herself like she did now.

In just two months, Valerie had transformed completely.

Adrienne, forcing a smile, greeted, “You’re here for dinner too?”

Jasmine, seeing Adrienne still looking like the same old awkward girl, felt her jealousy of Valerie fade a little. She sniffed, “Yeah, my boyfriend brought me here for dinner.”

Adrienne was angry but had long since gotten used to this kind of malice. She held her tongue, keeping her frustration inside.

Valerie’s eyes turned cold, her voice sharp. “You really do have a sense of superiority.”

Jasmine arrogantly tilted her chin. “I don’t feel superior, but I do pity you. I mean, I understand wanting to see the world, but you don’t need to go far, do you? Lobster with cream cheese? Tsk. You really dare to order that? Did you suddenly get some extra income?”

What extra income could she have made so quickly?

The meaning was clear–Jasmine was implying something about Valerie’s financial status.

Adrienne was furious. “What are you talking about?”

Jasmine smirked and covered her mouth. “Did I hit a nerve? Are you embarrassed now?”

Valerie, however, remained perfectly calm, looking at her coldly. “I did make some money from my internship, but the stock market is too risky. So, when I made some profits, I figured I might as well enjoy it. Otherwise, how else would I prevent the termites in the dorm from draining all my money?”

Jasmine, sensing the implied jab, visibly faltered, her face turning a shade darker. “You’re still into stocks? I bet that’s just an excuse. Who knows what you’re really doing?”

“Please don’t project your life onto others,” Valerie smiled. “Just because you’re in one line of work doesn’t mean others are the same.”

Jasmine, infuriated, sneered, “You’re nothing but a prostitute.”

“I didn’t say anything. You’re just admitting it now,” Valerie said, lightly covering her mouth with a smile.

Jasmine was completely taken aback, her face burning with anger.

Valerie’s calm, composed expression was already captivating enough, but when she smiled, it became irresistible, leaving people mesmerized.

Jasmine’s boyfriend, feeling a bit flustered, interrupted, “Alright, we’re here to eat, not to argue.”

Jasmine, her eyes red with anger, slapped her boyfriend and shouted, “Are you even a man? Your girlfriend’s being insulted right in front of you.”

Her boyfriend, growing impatient, said, “Isn’t this your fault? You’re the one causing all this trouble. If it were me, I’d have just done something about it. Your roommate’s temper is actually pretty good compared to what I would’ve done.”

Adrienne, secretly relieved, couldn’t help but feel a little satisfaction.

Valerie, with a hint of a smile, said, “The bystander always has the clearest view. In public, when your girlfriend behaves like a rabid dog, it doesn’t just make her look bad, it makes you look bad too”

Jasmine’s face flushed with embarrassment. “Who do you think you are…”

“Enough,” Jasmine’s boyfriend said, pulling her away. “Don’t make a scene. I won’t take you next time.”

Chapter 73

After they left, the air seemed to clear instantly.

Adrienne looked at Valerie with admiration. “You’re amazing. I didn’t know you were such a smooth talker.”

Valerie chuckled. “Smooth talker? After we finish eating, we still have a tough battle ahead when we get back to the dorm.”

Adrienne’s eyes lit up with admiration.

When they finished the meal and paid the bill, Adrienne couldn’t help but feel heartache.

Their meal had cost nearly a thousand dollars.

That was her half–month’s salary from writing.

Adrienne felt like her heart was bleeding.

Next time, if I invite her, will she be disappointed if I don’t spend that much?

Her anxiety grew as she returned to the dorm, only to overhear two girls complaining. “What’s going on? Why’s everything such a mess? Doesn’t Valerie ever clean up?”
