When Sophie saw Reece's name flash on her phone, she hesitated for a split second before finally picking up. Silence hung in the air for a moment until Reece's voice broke through, asking softly, "Are you okay?"
"I'm okay." Her words were simple, yet her voice carried a noticeable rasp.
She had spent the entire day lying in bed, lost in thought, doing absolutely nothing else.
"I'm outside your house."
Reece's words caught Sophie off guard. She slowly got out of bed, made her way to the window, and gently peeked through the curtain. Sure enough, there was Reece. He stood there in a crisp white shirt, looking sharp, a mask covering his face perhaps to stay incognito.
"If you want to leave, I can take you away."
"Okay."
Sophie barely hesitated. As she ended the call, a shadow of doubt flickered in her eyes.
Colby had been waiting by the door for ages and finally heard Sophie open it. A hint of hope sparked in his eyes. "Sophie, can we talk..."
"Mr. Colby, please step aside."
Her voice was icy.
Hearing 'Mr. Colby' made his smile falter. Sophie had never addressed him so distantly before.
"What... did you call me?"
"Mr. Colby."
Her tone was cool, final. "Let's take a break, okay? We shouldn't see each other for a while." With that, she slipped off her engagement ring and handed it back. "Here."
As the ring clattered to the floor, Colby felt a sharp pain in his chest. This kind of deep, soul-crushing agony brought tears to his eyes.
Sophie turned and headed downstairs, tears streaming freely. She hadn’t wanted to say those hurtful words. But wasn’t Colby hurt too? She wasn’t a saint, couldn’t forgive everything. Especially not from a husband who claimed to love her but didn’t feel it.
Once Sophie was gone, Colby finally knelt and picked up the ring from the floor. Sophie had told him the night before she didn’t want others breaking the news of his illness to her. Yet, he still couldn’t bring himself to be honest with her. A moment's hesitation had turned into an irreversible mistake.
At the door, Reece handed Sophie a handkerchief. "The car's just outside. Wherever you want to go, I'm here."
"No, thanks. I don't want to go anywhere right now."
Sophie didn’t meet Reece’s eyes. She needed space to calm down; she was too drained to process everything that had happened.

Enjoying the story, to much victimising Sophie, they could at least try to target others. Hope at some point Sophie comes clean and forgives James and explain her view of loving the boy James was. Just so they both learn and move on. Really needs to be some consequences for the instigators instead of being let go. Sandy needs to see Vanessa is using her as a cover, and Sandy needs to wake up to herself, or be held responsible by her father for alienating the people she was supposed to make contact with. Hope the reporter brother is keeping an eye on what Vanessa and Odie are up to, and that he has he’s own justice in store. Hope he becomes like Reese a good partner. Hope James lives and finds he’s HEA. Need to put Nicole in prison , no release and several lifetimes , with all the evidence on the crimes she’s committed just to get her out of the way guilt free. More about what’s up with Gordon....
