Lauren kept her gaze fixed on the floor, avoiding the sharp scrutiny of Mr. Brennan. Her palms were slick with sweat.
Logan, meanwhile, seemed entirely oblivious to the tension gripping the Brennans. He smiled politely. “Could it have been misplaced somewhere? Would you mind having someone look for it again, sir?”
The realization dawned on Mr. Brennan in an instant—Logan’s visit today was clearly about that ginseng—or, more accurately, about Lauren herself.
“Lauren,” he said, his tone commanding, “is there something you want to tell us?”
The rest of the Brennan family stared at Lauren in disbelief.
Just last night, they’d been praising Lauren for her thoughtfulness and devotion, only to discover now that the ginseng hadn’t been her doing at all?
Lauren, always so proud and aloof, how could she have lied about something like this?
With everyone’s eyes on her, Lauren stiffened, her expression growing rigid.
She’d pulled off stunts like this plenty of times before, but this was the first time someone had caught her—and exposed her, no less, right in front of the entire family.
“Lauren, did Anastasia really give you that ginseng?” Lady Brennan asked, the doubt in her voice unmistakable as she fixed her gaze on her granddaughter.
Lauren clenched her palm, her mind racing. It took only a moment for her to regain her composure, and she spoke at last, her voice tinged with shame. “Yes. I’m sorry, Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt. I lied to you last night.”
She’d actually admitted it—just like that.
Of course, she only dared to confess because she already had a backup plan.
Before anyone could express their disappointment, Lauren quickly added, “I’m sorry, Grandpa. I know what I did was wrong, but I was really worried about your health. You needed that ginseng, but if I’d told you it came from Anastasia, I knew you wouldn’t accept it. That’s why I lied.”
The Brennans were momentarily stunned.
After all these years together, hearing Lauren’s sincere and remorseful confession, Lady Brennan’s suspicion melted away. Her expression softened. “You meant well, child, but don’t do this again, all right?”
