The room was thick with silence, the kind that pressed on everyone’s nerves.
All eyes turned to Anastasia, wide with disbelief. No one had expected her to be this bold.
She was standing up to the vice dean, after all!
“You!” The vice dean’s face darkened, voice trembling with fury. “Anastasia! Who gave you the nerve to speak to me like that?!”
Anastasia straightened her back, her expression calm and unyielding. “And why shouldn’t I speak to you this way?”
Mr. Evert, gripping the book in his hands, slammed it onto the table with a thunderous bang. “Have you forgotten what it means to respect your teachers?!”
Anastasia batted her long lashes, her tone almost playful. “Of course I know. But honestly, what century are we living in? When a teacher uses their position to settle personal scores and singles out a student on purpose, am I supposed to just keep quiet? Surely Global Harmony Medical Institute isn’t that old-fashioned.”
Otto looked like he might faint from outrage.
“Anastasia!” Lauren snapped, her face stiff with disapproval. “You—”
“You’d better stay out of this.” Anastasia cut her off, a hint of a smirk playing on her lips. “You benefit from the status quo. Are you really going to criticize me right now?”
Her words were blunt and razor-sharp, leaving Lauren momentarily speechless.
Mr. Evert was livid. “Get out—!”
“Surely you’re not telling me to leave Global Harmony Medical Institute?” Anastasia interrupted smoothly, still smiling. “I got in here on my own merit. What right do you have to kick me out? And if I’m not mistaken, you’re only the vice dean, aren’t you?”
She let the question hang in the air before continuing, “Isn’t it Marico Lockwood—Mr. Lockwood—who actually runs the place? If you want me gone, does she know about it?”
Mr. Evert’s face flushed from red to pale and back again.
Anastasia, unfazed, took her seat as well.
She listened carefully for a while and soon pieced things together.
At Global Harmony Medical Institute, it wasn’t enough to just study from books; the school placed a far greater emphasis on hands-on training. Students frequently went out to treat real patients as part of their education.
Mr. Calderon, the patient Otto had mentioned, was their toughest case yet.
The man had been in a car accident months ago and remained in a coma ever since. His family had sought help from every top physician they could find, but nothing worked. Eventually, they brought him to Global Harmony Medical Institute, making him a challenge for the students there.
The students had already visited Mr. Calderon for several rounds of diagnoses, but none of their efforts had made a difference. This time was their last shot—if they failed again, the family would be moving him out of Fairhaven for good.
Up until now, Lauren and a few others had led all the previous treatments. On the way over, Anastasia had overheard enough to know that the two girls who’d been gossiping about her earlier—Cora and Erin—were both loyal followers of Lauren.
