The others crowded around, their expressions shifting from skepticism to shock to pure awe.
“Ma’am… you actually did it?” Ms. Evelyn whispered, her voice faint.
“Did you think I was bluffing?” Anastasia yawned again. “Alright, send it to the summit committee.”
“Yes, right away!” Mr. Lynn said, his face glowing with excitement.
Anastasia turned to her team. “You’ve all earned a couple of days off. Go home and rest.”
“No way!” one of the researchers immediately protested. “The summit is too important! We have to be there!” The others all nodded in agreement, their tired, bloodshot eyes shining with an almost fanatical devotion. This past week, they had witnessed a miracle.
Anastasia sighed in mock resignation. “Fine. If you insist on working, I’ll just have to give you all bonuses. Now, go home.”
After they had dispersed, she turned to Sean. “Anything important happen at the company while I was… occupied?”
“Nothing at the company, ma’am,” he replied. “But something did happen with you.”
“Hmm?” A jolt of alarm shot through her. “What do you mean?”
