Celena’s Perspective
In the rearview mirror, the flashing police lights clung to us like a swarm of infuriating fireflies. Ha! Think you can catch me? Dream on! I jerked the steering wheel, the stolen police car roaring in protest as I slammed the accelerator. The vehicle, a furious beast of metal, wove and darted through traffic with reckless abandon. Tires screeched against the asphalt as we left one sluggish family car after another in our dust.
Wind whipped through the shattered windows, tangling my hair, but it set my blood on fire. This feeling... was so damn good! The fear was gone, replaced by a pure, intoxicating thrill. Controlling this speed and power, toying with our pursuers, made every cell in my body sing.
Beside me, Jacob was grimacing as he picked shards of glass from his arms and shoulders. "Hiss... damn it..." he muttered, flicking a bloody piece out the window.
It looked painful, but who cared? Our freakish werewolf healing would take care of it in minutes, no scars left behind. I had more important things to do.
"Call Lily!" I yelled at him, my eyes locked on the road ahead as I executed another heart-stopping swerve around a slow-moving truck.
Gritting his teeth, Jacob fumbled for his phone with his less-injured hand, dialed, and put it on speaker. Soon, Lily’s voice, laced with her trademark lazy drawl yet utterly dependable, filled the car, mixing with Jacob’s pained hisses.
"Sounds like you two are having a party over there?"
"Lily! We need help!" My words came out in a rapid-fire shout, fighting the wind and engine roar. "We were ambushed by human cops! At the station, they... they interrogated me like that! Jacob fought them to get me out, and now we’re in a stolen patrol car with at least five units on our tail!"
I gave her the quick version, emphasizing their unorthodox, hostile interrogation tactics. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
Lily was silent for two seconds. When she spoke again, the laziness was gone, replaced by a cool, efficient tone. "Understood. Stay on the line. I’m contacting the pack lawyers and our ’friends’ in the human council. Just hang on, and don’t do anything stupid, like driving this one into a river."
Don’t do anything stupid? I almost laughed. She had no idea—I was pushing two hundred kilometers an hour down the highway and feeling absolutely fantastic! And then Jacob, that idiot, found a switch and activated the roof lights and siren! Now cars ahead of us scrambled in panic to get out of the way, clearing a perfect path. The sirens behind us sounded even more furious, but they could do nothing but eat our dust.
It felt like a lifetime, but was probably only twenty minutes later, when Lily’s voice returned. "Done. The pack leaned on them hard. The local PD brass got a severe warning. The APB and pursuit orders against you should be rescinded. But, guys, I’d still lay low. You did just trash a police station."
Almost the moment she finished speaking, I glanced in the mirror—a miracle happened. The pursuing police cars, one by one, killed their lights and sirens. They slowed down noticeably, eventually pulling over to the side of the road as if following some order.
Ha! Lily’s reach was even greater than I thought.
But we couldn’t keep driving this conspicuous cop car. My eyes scanned and locked onto a sleek, red Ford Mustang puttering in the slow lane. Perfect. That’s the one.
