“But… you and Queenie.”
Those words pierced Julian like icy needles, striking right at his deepest guilt.
So that’s what she’d wanted—to give him her shares as a birthday gift.
But then, she’d caught him with Queenie that day. And… that child.
No wonder she was suspicious and jealous.
He really hadn’t handled things well.
“Gwyneth.”
Usually so composed, Julian couldn’t keep up the perfect act any longer. He cut her off, voice urgent.
He needed to clear this up, right now.
Gripping Gwyneth’s narrow shoulders with both hands, his touch betrayed a hint of agitation. He leaned in, locking eyes with her, desperate to convey sincerity. His tone was more intense and heartfelt than ever before.
“Please, believe me. There’s nothing going on between me and Queenie. I—”
Suddenly, a cold, low voice cut through the air behind them—so flat and frigid it seemed to blow straight in from the Arctic, freezing Julian’s next words in his throat.
“Julian.”
Bennett had appeared silently in the shadows of the entryway, his tall frame radiating a quiet, intimidating force.
His expression was impassive, his eyes cool as they swept over Julian’s hands on Gwyneth’s shoulders. There was no warmth in that gaze at all.
Finally, Bennett’s eyes settled on Julian’s face. His tone was calm, but there was an unmistakable command behind every word:
Now, only Gwyneth and Bennett remained in the entry hall.
Bennett’s gaze slid over to Gwyneth, his eyes no longer cold with anger, but sharp, as if he could see straight through her.
He studied the lingering apology and hurt on her face, the corners of his mouth lifting in the faintest, iciest trace of a smile.
He stepped forward, his height engulfing her, bringing a stifling sense of pressure.
Gwyneth felt goosebumps rise on her skin, her shoulders—still warm from Julian’s grip—tingling with residual heat.
“It… it wasn’t my fault. He’s the one who crossed the line.”
Her voice wavered, betraying her nerves.
Why did Bennett always have to catch her like this? And why did she always feel so guilty around him?
