She hadn’t eaten properly for days, and now hunger gnawed at her, making her feel weak.
Bennett didn’t say anything more. Instead, he gently tucked the blanket around her, smoothing the edges to make sure she was cocooned in warmth.
“Lie down and rest for a bit. I’ll go make you something to eat.”
With that, he turned and headed to the kitchen.
Gwyneth stared dazedly after Bennett’s tall, broad-shouldered figure as he strode away. She watched as he opened the fridge with practiced ease, pulled out a few ingredients, then reached for a dark apron hanging nearby and tied it over his expensive tailored suit.
Curled under the cozy blanket, Gwyneth felt sleep tugging at her, her eyelids growing heavier by the second.
The world blurred softly at the edges. A gentle warmth seeped into her chest, pushing out all the exhaustion and chill that had lingered there.
It felt wonderful to be cared for so thoughtfully.
Wrapped in the double comfort of the soft blanket and the mouthwatering aroma drifting from the kitchen, Gwyneth soon drifted into a light doze, only waking when the delicious scent finally roused her hunger completely.
She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and inhaled deeply, savoring the smell.
“You’re awake?”
Bennett’s voice was low and gentle as he spoke from beside her.
“Come eat—it’s ready. While it’s still hot.”
Gwyneth pushed herself up and shuffled over to the dining table. The moment she saw what was laid out, her appetite returned in full force.
A bowl of steaming noodles, topped with a perfectly fried egg, sat at the center. Beside it was a small plate of fresh fruit, artfully arranged.
Simple, but prepared with care.
She picked up her fork and knife, took a bite of the noodles, and her eyes widened in delight.
It tasted incredible.
Better than anything she’d had at any restaurant.
“This is amazing!”
She couldn’t help but exclaim, forgetting all about appearances as she focused on devouring her meal in earnest.
Bennett sat across from her, not eating, just quietly watching her with an unreadable intensity—a look of quiet, inexplicable satisfaction.
Halfway through her food, Gwyneth felt his gaze lingering and looked up, cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
“Aren’t you going to eat?”
Bennett’s lips quirked in the faintest of smiles as he took in the way her cheeks puffed out, making her look like a little hamster caught sneaking treats. But his tone remained even.
“I’m not hungry. I made this just for you. Eat up.”
A surge of warmth spread through her, and she nodded, no longer feeling shy. She went back to her meal with gusto, finishing every last bite of the noodles and fruit.
Sated, she patted her stomach, feeling as though the day’s weariness had been banished by this simple, delicious dinner.
But just as the peaceful moment seemed as if it might last, her phone rang sharply from the table. The screen lit up with a name—
The words detonated in Gwyneth’s mind like a bomb.
Julian had found her address?
And he was on his way here?
What on earth was he planning?!
How dare he! This was beyond crossing the line—now he was harassing her friends too.
She quickly reassured Elodie, apologizing in a rush.
“I’m so sorry, Elodie. I never meant for you to get dragged into this. I’m fine, really. Don’t worry—I’ll handle it.”
Anger surged through her, obliterating the comfort she’d felt just moments before. Her fingers tightened around her phone until her knuckles ached, fury and disgust burning away any lingering warmth.
She looked up, instinctively seeking Bennett.
He had already noticed her change in demeanor the moment she’d taken the call, his brow furrowing as she stood up in alarm.
Bennett didn’t need to hear the whole conversation to know something was seriously wrong. He could tell from Gwyneth’s expressions and the snippets he caught.
Now, seeing the anger on her face and the way her hands were clenched tight, his expression darkened, the gentle warmth he usually exuded replaced by a cold, commanding presence.
He stood and moved to her side, his voice steady and grave.
“What happened?”
