After leaving the Bennett Family, Lucas looked completely lost. By the time he snapped out of it, he found himself standing in the old neighborhood where Emily lived.

Whenever something was weighing on him, he’d always end up coming to Emily. He thought he’d outgrown this habit.

Suddenly, Lucas’s nose prickled with emotion. He picked up his pace, hurrying toward that damp, shadowy apartment

under the stairs.

Standing at the bottom of the stairs, Lucas took several deep breaths, rehearsing what he might say before finally mustering up the courage to knock on the door.

Thud, Thud, Thud. With each knock, Lucas felt his anxiety ratchet up another notch.

But the longer he knocked, the more that tension slowly ebbed away until it was completely gone.

Lucas knew Emily didn’t want to see him, but he’d finally realized his mistakes, and he was ready to make things right.

“Emily, please open the door. I-I just want to talk to you,” he said, his voice cracking. “I know I messed up. I was totally out of my mind, and I let Lydia fool me. I never meant to treat you that way.

“I really get it now. I was wrong. Emily, please, just give me a chance to make it up to you. Please.”

Lucas kept knocking on the door again and again, as if he wouldn’t give up unless Emily answered it herself.

He had no idea how long he’d been at it. The door never opened. Instead, the neighbor from diagonally across finally came

out.

“Hey, sir, you’ve been knocking forever. Didn’t you know the two young people who lived here already moved out?” the old man called out.

Lucas froze, panic suddenly surging in his chest. “Do you know where they moved to?”

He shook his head. “No idea, they didn’t say. But honestly, they’re both so young. It’s not right for them to stay in this rundown neighborhood forever. Austin’s pretty capable. They-”
