“You’re making it angry to stay mad at you,” she looked at him over hes

shoulder.

“Well, that is the point. You’ve endured enough difficulty in your life with a family who treated you as an afterthought, without needing husband who pisses you off and treats you with less regard then they did. I treated you poorly Alcee and for this, I am sorry. I hope you can forgive me.”

She swallowed her exhaustion and nodded. “I can forgive you. We are still learning about each other and figuring things out. I hope though big clusterfucks like the last twenty–four hours don’t happen frequently. It’s hard on the brain.”

He chuckled and stroked her hair off her cheek. “I meant what I said. I will do better.”

She lay there with her eyes closed and her mind awake again despite the backrub and hot bath. The conversation did more to wake her up than anything. The fallout from the day, the fight with Cianna and Raniero and the aftermath of her emotions were catching up with her.

“Do you need to work more?” the question quietly fell from her lips.

He nodded, “there are things I need to get accomplished before I sleep.”

“Will you be taking your computer back to your office or do you intend to sit here?”

“I was intending to sit here. I wanted to be near you but if I am bothering you or you need some more space, I’ll take my computer off to my office. Whatever you need, Alcee, I’m going to do for you.”

She shook her head and met his gaze shyly, “Actually, I would like for you to sit with me until I fall asleep.”

“Yeah?”

The wide smile on his face made her smile back. He seemed delighted she wanted him nearby.

“Don’t let it go to your head or anything but there is comfort in having you beside me after a day like today.” She swallowed the lump in her throat. “I know it doesn’t make sense because they don’t matter to me at all but having the word whore tossed around so much today has left me feeling low and a bit dirty. I’m not wanting to be alone with those feelings right now. I don’t know if it’s because I’m so relaxed or the bath did it to me but I’m feeling emotional and hurt. It brought up a lot of the shit my parents said to me in the past and it is under my skin.”

“Oh honey,” his softly spoken words were accompanied by him immediately crawling into the bed with her and wrapping his arms around her and pulling her into his chest. His entire body wrapped around her like a blanket. “It kills me you feel this way.”

She blinked at the strange and overwhelming need to sob as he hugged her tightly and kissed her temple softly.

“You are right when you say their opinion doesn’t matter. I need you to understand there is nothing in you, not the tiniest amount of you, which could be called a whore. You’re a beautiful pure soul, Alcee. I’m the luckiest man on the planet.”

“But Raniero knows I sold my virginity to you.”

“Bastiano made the mistake one night when Raniero asked how you and I met, back when I was searching for you, of telling Raniero we met through an online auction when I was going through the disgust of a sexually transmitted disease. He told him back then I went searching for a woman who only had me as a lover and how I found you. Raniero, based on what I heard from him today, doesn’t know the rest of the story. Why or how your family was treating you or what drove you to do what you did wasn’t shared with him and frankly it’s none of his business. His approval of you is not necessary for me. Your approval of him however is. If you don’t approve, he fucks off.”

“What if Raniero tells more people?” she let the fear rise up. “It’s one thing for the world to think I hooked up online with a man to get rid of my virginity, but my own family never knew I sold it off. Now your entire family knows and it’s nothing I’m ashamed of, but it made me feel icky today for the first time. What if he spreads things?”

“Then we will rewrite the narrative. I don’t want you to feel dirty over something I consider the best night of my life.”

“The best?” She yawned as he played with her hair, and she snuggled into his chest.

“The absolute best. You were more than I could dream possible. I searched for you for a long time, and it wasn’t because you weren’t wanted. You were my Aya. Despite the virginity, the connection and feeling I encountered with you was nothing I ever felt with anyone else. This holds true even today, Alcee. The minute I saw you again, I felt it in here,” he held her hand against his chest, “you and I were meant to belong to one

She sniffed against his chest her lips pressed to his firm flesh, “I feel it too. I can’t deny I was furious with you last night and I did contemplate taking Avalanche back to our old apartment,” she felt him tense beneath her, “but I knew it wasn’t in our best interests. Even when Merc reached out, I knew I wasn’t going anywhere.” She yawned again despite her attempt to stay awake.

“Well, I’m glad you stayed Alcee. Now, I want you to close your eyes and rest.”

“You’ll stay though?”

“I’m not going anywhere. I’ll hold you until you fall asleep and then I’ll finish what I need to do right there beside you.”

“Okay.” She felt safe and protected in the cocoon of his embrace. In minutes she was asleep,
