She's back (Morgan and Dante) novel Chapter 26

Chapter 26 - 26

Morgan's POV

"You seem happy." Winston said to me after the waiter was through with pouring him and I a glass of wine. "Did something good happen?"

Of course. Nothing felt better than showing Dante that he didn't have a say concerning where I decide to be, when I decide to be there and with whom I want to be there with.

I took a sip of the wine, letting it saturate my taste buds for some seconds before swallowing it. Turning the glass in my hands, I looked at Winston.

"Everything's just something to be happy for." I said with a smile. He smiled back, his eyes aglow with mirth.

"A toast?" He raised his glass.

"To?"

"Let's see..." He ran his hands through his hair. "To you, and to your happiness."

"You bet." I laughed clinking my glass with his. We ate dinner, cracking jokes and laughing. Before long, I was lost in the conversation, forgetting about things I was supposed to be worried about and laughing. "You have quite a sense of humour." I said between fits of laughter.

"Quite, is quite an understatement." He said while taking the last bite of his steak. "And that, was the last of heaven." He said with a sigh.

"Not really. How about dessert at the amusement park."

"You don't like the one here?"

"Sometimes, heaven's not found in places like this." He looked at me for some seconds. "What's wrong?"

He shook his head. "Just happy I'm spending this Friday with you."

I don't know what happened in that moment, but I felt my heart skip a beat, and then skip two more beats when he smiled at me. He had been smiling at me this whole time, but this was kind of different... It was magical.

"Yeah, me too." Very true, I was glad to spend the Friday with him. It was a time of fun and fresh breath for me, away from Dante and his rubbish attempt at trying to make me do things for the "sake" of the company.

"Ready for that amusement park dessert you talked about?"

"Bring it on." I replied, getting up from the seat. We walked to the cashier where Winston paid the bill before stepping we stepped out into the sun. I was about to open the door to the front seat of the car when Winston beat me to it. "You know you don't have to..."

"Do this?" He pointed at the car door he was holding. "Maybe, maybe not... I do. Are you getting in?"

"Do I have a choice?" I asked with the same energy he was radiating, getting into the car. The music playing in the car was one of Mozart's classical pieces which of course, I wasn't a fan of.

"A classical guy..." I commented.

"Not really. Just a fan of here and there as long as it speaks the language my soul understands."

"What's that supposed to mean? Soulful speaking music?" I asked with a laugh, not making sense of what he nor I was saying.

He shrugged. "You?"

"Umm...." I thought for a moment. I hadn't really giving much thought to my likes and dislikes when it came to music. But I was sure of one thing, I hated emotional songs. Songs that drove you to tears, pathetic. "Songs that tell you about a future waiting for you instead of a dwelling on a bad past. "

"My mind tells me that there's a lot of symbolism in that sentence." He said looking at me.

"Eyes on the road." I said with a little laugh. "And don't ask."

He laughed, making a zipping gesture with his hand over his lips. "I won't."

I nodded. So far, he was someone to not dig around people's past. He was fine with whatever I told him, and never tried to make me talk about things I didn't want to talk about. Anywhere I stopped, he wouldn't push. He never pushed. And I liked that about him. Unlike Dante, who never knew where the line was and never to cross it.

"Morgan?"

"Yes?"

"You kind of zoned out."

"Oh... I'm sorry. You were saying?"

"That were here." He pointed to the amusement park in front of us.

"Oh..."

"You sound like you've lost all excitement."

"I haven't." I replied with a smile as he pulled to a halt at the parking lot. I got out of the car before he could get out and try to hold the car door open for me.

The moment I stepped out of the car, I shuddered. I felt eyes on me. I served my head around, looking around the park lit with streetlights for any sign that there was someone watching me.

The park wasn't deserted, there were a handful of people around. Couples seated on the benches, taking and laughing, the occasional person who was takin a run with their headphones in and running shoes on, a group of college kids eating a hurried dinner of burgers and rushing to a night class maybe.

The atmosphere was serene.

But I couldn't shake of the feeling of eyes following my every move.

"Morgan?" Winston gently touched my arm. I blinked out of my thoughts and met his eyes. "Are you okay?"

"Yes," I smiled. "I'm fine. We should go,"

He nodded, his eyes flashed with unasked questions but he led the way and we walked side by side.
