If she had stayed and spent time with Marguerite, maybe the accident would never have happened.
Her biggest regret was knowing that Marguerite was afraid of flying because her parents had died in a plane crash. She had dismissed it as something that could be overcome, thinking Marguerite just didn't value their friendship enough to try.
But then her own mother died of breast cancer. After that, even hearing the word "cancer" made her heart ache. Only then did she finally understand. There is no true empathy until you have walked in someone else's shoes.
She was plunged into a spiral of endless regret. She had apologized to Marguerite countless times in her dreams, crying. She should never have said they should stop being friends. She should never have tried to use their friendship to force her to do something. Marguerite must have been so hurt that her best friend couldn't understand her pain. She had even been willing to overcome her sleep issues to travel domestically with her, and Lindsay, ungrateful, had thrown a tantrum.
“I was so much less mature than you back then,” Lindsay said, her voice choked with emotion. “I couldn’t understand your fear. After my mom passed, I finally got it. I’m so, so sorry, Maggie.”
Marguerite had been angry about the fight. When she committed to someone, she was all in. She had never expected Lindsay to throw their friendship away so easily. She had her own pride, too. If Lindsay wanted to end things, she wasn't going to beg her to stay.
But now, looking at Lindsay’s tear-streaked face, she said earnestly, “Lindsay, if I could, I would wish for you to never understand my fear.” She never wanted her best friend to experience that kind of trauma.
Lindsay couldn't hold back any longer. Tears streamed down her face as she threw her arms around Marguerite. “Waaaah, I’m sending you another fifty million!” She reached for her phone.
Marguerite quickly stopped her. “That’s enough, that’s enough! The first fifty million was plenty!”
