Shirley was elated when the embryo was transferred into her body.
She failed to get Zeke to sleep with her, and she wasn't able to make him give out his sperm willingly. Hence, she could only resort to underhand tactics to get her way.
However, there was nothing to worry about. When the child was born, her position as the future matriarch of the Shurmer family would be firmly established.
“How are you doing, Shirley? Are you feeling okay?”
Shirley flashed an exhausted smile at her mother as she said in excitement, “I no longer feel any pain when I think of the fact that Zeke's child is currently in my belly. Mom, the Shurmer family would surely recognize me as their daughter-in-law this time, right?”
A look of hesitation flashed across Genevieve's face. She pondered for a moment before saying, “Shirley, you must never ever let Zeke do a paternity test with the baby in your belly. Do you hear me?”
Shirley was stunned. She then looked at her mother, confused. “But why not? This child is Zeke's, so why can't he do the paternity test?”
Genevieve averted her gaze and stammered, “I-I'm just worried that when they examined the baby's blood during the paternity test, they'll find out that it's a test tube baby. You have to bring this secret to your grave, and you can't let Zeke suspect anything. Do you understand?”
Shirley had her doubts, but she thought that her mother would never do anything to harm her, so she nodded. “Okay. I'll remember what you said. I'll never let Zeke do a paternity test with this child.”
“Good. Just listen to me. I promise you that you'll marry into the Shurmer family in no time.”
“Thanks, Mom.”
In the study at the Jefferson residence, Rhonda wore an evil smile as she leaned against the cupboard, looking at Clarence who was sitting on the couch.
“Why are you hesitating, Dad? Bailey is not your daughter. You have raised her for nothing, and she ended up putting me in this predicament. As if that isn't bad enough, she's now planning to do something to Zoey as well. Oh, by the way, you should know about Zoey's background by now, right? Are you going to stand by and watch her ruin the lives of both of your daughters?”
Clarence threw the newspaper in his hands onto the table. “How dare she!”
Rhonda scoffed. “Of course she dares to do so! She gave me to a beggar and allowed him to torment me. She already did something so heinous, so there's nothing she wouldn't do.”
She then continued, “The public is now calling her an illegitimate child, so she's eager to prove that she's not. There's only one way for her to do so, and that is to return to the Shurmer family to reclaim her identity. Think about it. If someone as ruthless as her were to return to the Shurmer family, what do you think will happen to your daughter, Zoey?”
Clarence was trembling all over. Apparently, the method that Rhonda suggested affected him greatly.
I would never have come up with such a method. This daughter of mine is so evil. How did I raise someone like her?
Taking note of the hesitation on Clarence's face, Rhonda continued persuading, “If you're afraid that your reputation will be ruined, you don't have to. We can just say that Bailey was the one who seduced you, so you wouldn't be condemned. Plus, all you have to do is roll around on the bed with her and put on an act. Regardless of whether or not anything actually happened, that alone will make the headlines and cause an uproar.”
Clarence's legs gave out as he slumped on the couch.
He was now caught in a dilemma and had no idea how to decide.
His daughter was right. Only such scandalous news could ruin Bailey's life. That was also the only way he could secure Zoey's position in the Shurmer family.
“Take some time to consider it, Dad, but don't take too long. Bailey would've already kicked your daughter out of the Shurmer family while you're still having trouble deciding.”
