They combed through the entire freshman list and found only one student named “Mia.” But that Mia…
The admissions officer hesitated, glancing at Andre. “Are you sure the applicant’s name is Mia? We only accepted one ‘Mia’ this year.” But that Mia happened to be their university president.
Andre nodded. “Yes, that’s her. I’m her husband—Andre.”
There was a pause, so long and awkward it felt like the call had dropped.
“Hello?” Andre prompted.
The person on the other end finally found their voice, shaky with nerves. “Andre, it’s fine. No need for any paperwork.”
With that, the problem was solved. Mia could finally relax, knowing she could register for school even without the official admission letter.
Henry, who’d just been on the receiving end of some fatherly discipline, was now cozied up in his mom’s lap. The so-called “troublemaker” snuggled right up to his “victim,” his chubby cheek pressed into her shirt.
Every time his dad glanced his way, Henry would whip his head around, refusing to make eye contact.
Andre tossed his phone onto the table, the thud only making Henry more determined to avoid meeting his dad’s eyes.
Later that evening—
Andre was in the shower when a tiny, naked whirlwind charged in. “Daddy, your favorite person is here!”
Soon, the bathroom was filled with Henry’s giggles and non-stop “Daddy! Daddy!”
Andre’s phone started ringing outside.
Mia, in the middle of blow-drying her hair, peeked at the caller ID. “Babe, it’s Conner.”
Andre called back, “Just hang up for now.”
Mia did as he said, ending the call.
Meanwhile, across town in Newtown, Conner stared at his phone in disbelief. “He really just hung up on me? Jealous I’m having a daughter? Can’t even pick up my call?”
