Mia thought back to the tangled mess of relationships she’d left behind overseas. “Yeah, we met up. He probably had something to take care of at school and went back,” she said, keeping it vague.
Andre shot her a surprised look—she hadn’t breathed a word about Kristen. He couldn’t help but smile, a little amused and a little proud.
The truth was, Mia hadn’t figured it all out herself. She wasn’t about to spill everything to her parents and have them jump to wild conclusions. Besides, whoever this was, it was just her brother’s friend. If there was anything worth sharing, Cooper should be the one to say it. If she told their parents, they’d just end up pestering Cooper with questions and make things worse.
Of course, she still planned to keep tabs on her brother.
“Mom, Dad, stop piling more meat on Henry’s plate. He gets spoiled enough when he’s out and about,” Mia teased, eyeing her son’s chubby cheeks.
“What do you mean spoiled? You kids have had enough trouble already. Henry’s been through so much—how many times has he gotten caught up in something scary? It breaks my heart. Come on, Henry, eat more so you’ll grow tall,” Madison said as she tried to sneak another piece of meat onto Henry’s plate.
Mia swooped in, snagged the meat, and swapped it for some broccoli. “Veggies, buddy. That’s where the real power is.”
Hansen listened, shaking his head. “Every year, Mia and my little grandson can’t seem to stay out of trouble. You two got a curse or something?”
A shiver ran down Mia’s spine. “Dad, what are you up to?”
The next morning, just after sunrise, the three of them stood shivering in the yard while Hansen waved some kind of smoldering herb around them, thick smoke swirling everywhere. “Just hang on, I asked a master about it—this’ll chase away bad luck and bring you peace,” Hansen promised solemnly.
Andre, corralled into the smoke by his father-in-law, did his best to shield Mia and Henry. He frowned, coughing. “Dad, that’s enough. Mia and Henry can’t breathe.”
Henry puckered his lips, coughing, but the sight of the smoky bundle had him wide-eyed, wanting to play with it.
