After Riley was arrested, Tony’s apartment in Havenbrook felt strangely still. He stared at his phone, frowning at a message from an unknown number: “There’s always a price to pay for calm waters.”
A knot of worry tightened in Tony’s chest. With Riley in custody, everything about the Dark Web was at risk of spilling out. If that happened, he—
As expected, within days, the police started picking up key members of the Dark Web, one after another.
Tony gripped his phone, mind racing about what to do next, when a knock echoed through the apartment.
He opened the door to find a boy around twelve or thirteen standing there. “Uncle Tony.”
The sight of the kid made something click in Tony’s mind—he suddenly understood what Riley’s message had meant.
A few of the Dark Web’s sub-leaders still hadn’t been caught; they’d vanished without a trace. The biggest branch, run by Miles, was especially elusive—no one had seen or heard from him.
But it wasn’t long before those missing leaders started turning up, one by one, dumped right at the police station’s front steps.
Watching the news, Annie couldn’t help but laugh as she shared with her sister, “Sis, this has Conner written all over it. He’s the only one who’d handle things this directly.”
He’d always been like that, even when he was chasing after her. She’d be at work, her phone would ring, and he’d say, “Hey Annie, got a little gift for you.” She’d step outside and find the criminal she’d been hunting delivered right to her door.
