Wayne hadn’t made it far before his mom swooped in, grabbing him by the shoulders. This time, she was all maternal instinct, whisking him off at a run.
Once they made it to the porch, Wayne clamped onto his dad’s leg and refused to play with his mom anymore, no matter what.
The boxes of fireworks Andre had dropped off? Almost gone—Jade had pretty much set them all off in one wild night.
Wayne, snuggled safely in his dad’s arms, stared up at the sky as bursts of fireworks exploded above them—brilliant, wild, lighting everything up.
But every time his mom went to light another fuse, Wayne’s little body would tense all over again. Even in his dad’s arms, his skinny legs went stiff, and he clung tight around his dad’s neck. He wanted to tell his dad to scoop him up and run, but the words just wouldn’t come.
After about an hour, Jade finally ran out of steam—and out of fireworks. She was tired, and now she was starving.
They headed inside, and dinner was almost ready.
But nobody got to eat until Jade had poured out every fancy compliment she knew for each dish, going on and on. Only then did Coleen let everyone dig in. Otherwise, Jade would’ve caught an earful for not lifting a finger in the kitchen but still expecting a feast—so Coleen made sure to teach her daughter a little lesson.
“Why does eating dinner feel like a workout?” Molly joked, stealing a shrimp from Wayne’s plate.
Coleen fired back, “Tomorrow, you do the cooking, and we’ll just sit around for a change. See how much ‘work’ it really is.”
Jade grinned, “I’ll just order takeout.”
Coleen rolled her eyes. “Who’s delivering on New Year’s Eve, huh?”
“Majestic Dining Enclave is,” Molly chimed in, mouth full. “Dad and the rest are having their New Year’s dinner there. I’ll have Mia check for me later.”
Over at Majestic Dining Enclave, the party was in full swing.
Hansen was already red-faced from drinking, talking slow and slurred but insisting he wasn’t drunk at all—totally sober, he claimed.
Bruce was feeling it too. “Haven’t drunk like this in ages. Better quit while I’m ahead, or it’ll hit me all at once.”
