It was past midnight again. Ever since the school holidays started, none of the Cedillo kids had managed to get to bed before midnight.

At two in the morning, Chad and Andre were each dragging a reluctant wife or kid toward the bedrooms, nagging, “Go wash up and get to sleep already. If you two can’t get up tomorrow and family drops by, don’t come crying to me when you’re embarrassed under the covers.”

Molly just grinned. “If my skin’s thick enough, the embarrassment’s all theirs, not mine.”

Mia was already plotting. “Honey, if family shows up tomorrow, can you tell them I took Henry to my mom’s place?”

“No chance,” Andre shot back.

But the next morning, the sisters were jolted awake by a phone call, after barely five hours of sleep.

Even Chad was surprised—what on earth could get his champion sleeper up so early? Sure enough, Isaac, the other serial snoozer, was startled awake too. Wayne sat up in bed, his little face still lost in a sleepy haze.

Andre glanced at his wife, eyebrows drawn. “Mia, where are you two off to this early?”

“Babe, Molly and I have to head out. We’ll skip breakfast.”

In the car, Molly, hair a mess and face unwashed, floored the gas. “If Leo passes out at home from a fever and there’s nobody there, I’m calling an ambulance and recording the whole thing—let everyone see how helpless he is without Anya around.”

Mia rolled her eyes. “Molly, quit your noise. I’m calling Leo again. Just keep your hands on the wheel.”

Earlier that morning, Anya had called Mia, voice trembling with tears. “Auntie, are you home?”

“What’s wrong, Anya?”

“I can’t reach Chad. He’s been sick with a cold for days, and I’m not with him. Can you and Aunt Molly check on him for me?” Anya was so anxious, she was crying. “I’ve called and called, but no one picks up.”

Mia hurried to wake her sister. “Get up, something’s wrong with Leo.”

One line was all it took—Jade shot upright, still groggy but already asking, “What’s up with Leo?”
