The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter novel Chapter 874

Chapter 874: PAIN IN HIS VOICE

Amee watched how her words shattered his world and she felt bad to be so harsh on him. Cane was always having a hard time to express his feeling ever since he was little and the slavery only worsened it when he thought it was his responsibility for every death of their pack member.

And now, when he thought he could find happiness, he was faced with the death of his two daughters. No word would be able to explain the pain of burying your own flesh and blood, and Cane had to go through that not only once...

Part of him must have died that day.

Not only he didn’t have time to grieve properly, but he also had to witness Iris was on the verge of insanity.

Still, he didn’t say a word about his grievances and now, when he thought everything would go to the direction he intended, a variable that he didn’t expect, happened. It brought back everything he tried to suppress and his unfinished grieving...

Cane processed everything alone and if he kept this up, not only he was going to lose Iris and their babies, but he would also lose himself eventually.

Amee approached him and used his silent to speak again, this time her voice softened up a little bit.

"Cane, when we were in the slavery with so many deaths surrounded us and when there was only misery, you did the imaginable thing and took us out of the darkness. If there was hope, you are the hope we have." Amee stood in front of Cane, her eyes were gentle, like a mother. "We were thriving during those time because of you, because we have our faith in you. You did what they believed you couldn’t do. Miracle happened, Cane. We don’t know the future.

This time, why don’t you put your faith in your mate? She has endured adversity as much as we are. She was thriving just like us. She is not as weak as you think she is and together you can make miracle happened again."

"I can’t lose another child, Amee." Cane gritted out his words.

"Rather than thinking of losing yet another child when it has not happened yet, why don’t you think of how to protect them better? Your mate and your babies." Amee stretched out her hand and patted his shoulder. "You wasted your energy on worrying the wrong thing, Cane and by doing so, you hurt your mate also yourself in the process for something that you can avoid."

Cane took a step back and then sat down on a chair. He looked very exhausted now. He was worn off, as if he couldn’t fight anymore. He was defeated. "I bring her nothing, but pain, Amee."

"We are all in pain, Cane, but you must be so blind if you couldn’t see how her eyes lit up every time she saw you, or how desperate she wanted to make you happy, you are not a fool. You must know everything she had done to prove how much she loves you."

Amee knelt down in front of Cane and looked at him in the eyes.

"Tell me, have she ever said that she loved you?"

"She did."

Iris was the first one, who said that.

"Do you think she lied to you when she said that?" Cane didn’t answer her question, but his silence was an answer that Amee was looking for. "Cane, love grows not only from pain. If you only brought pain on her, she couldn’t possibly love you and she will not be in pain right now."

Amee took both Cane’s hands like when he was a child and was at lost of what to do. Right now, Cane was in that same situation. He was at lost. He didn’t know where to navigate his feeling.

"You have taken enough time and she is waiting for you."

"I have lost three children, Amee. I don’t think I can handle it if I have to lose another child. If I have to bury my own child again, I would rather be buried with them as well. And Iris..." He didn’t continue.

"Have faith in your mate, Cane." Amee smiled at him. "Rather than thinking of burying them, why don’t you think of raising them? We don’t know the future, let’s not get ahead of ourselves."

Cane leaned his head against Amee’s shoulder. He closed his eyes and let her words sunk in.

"It has been so hard, Amee."

"I know, alpha. I know life has been so cruel to you." Amee patted his shoulder. "But, you are very strong and together, you will grow stronger."

After that, Amee stayed with him until the morning came and when eventually she left, Cane still sat on the same chair. He didn’t do anything, only sat there when he received the report from Ethan and Jace.

In the afternoon, Lou came. There was this portal where Lou emerged inside of Cane’s tent. He looked like he was going to pass out.

"I am going to rest and then deal with him later after I feel better!"

Lou messed his clothes, looking for the color he liked but when he couldn’t find it, once again he cursed and took one in black color to change into and then go to Cane’s makeshift bed.

Lou cursed again and then stormed off. He only wanted to sleep, okay!? Why the alpha was being so stingy with a bed!?

The moment Lou had left, Cane asked someone to clean up his mess, but he himself didn’t move from the chair. He didn’t touch his food and only stared at the distance, giving the order here and there.

Once again, the night fell, it was quiet, aside from occasional strange noise that came from the magic users, who were still trying to breakdown the protection.

Finally when the midnight came, Cane stood up and walked out of the tent. He went straight to the carriage, where Iris had been staying for days. It had been a week, since the last time he saw her.

"Alpha!" Eron was surprised to see Cane finally approached the luna. The other four warriors greeted him too, but the alpha ignored them, as he went into the carriage.

Inside, Hanna was sleeping, but Cane’s presence was so strong, it woke her up. Groggily, she greeted the alpha, but Cane waved his hand to dismiss her.

Hanna didn’t say anything anymore and hastily went out of the carriage. Her missy had been waiting for him and he was finally here.

Once it was only the two of them, Cane sat down next to his mate. He didn’t need a close inspection to tell how much distress he had caused her. Even with her eyes closed, you could see how much her eyes were swollen. Her nose was still red from her cry.

And then suddenly she startled, as if she just woken up from a nightmare. She gasped and curled her body, but then she noticed the person next to her was not Hanna, especially when she felt his hand touched her cheek to brush her curls away from her face.

"C- Cane?" Her voice coarse. She didn’t believe her eyes. Was she still dreaming? Quickly, she grabbed his hand tightly, but Cane could feel how cold her hands were.

"How much have I hurt you this time?" Pain in his voice.
