lan’s brows knitted together, the tension on his face plain to see.
Chloe stood up, her expression icy.
Lying on the couch, lan reached out and grabbed her wrist.

Chloe looked down at him from above, meeting his gaze as she forcefully shook off his hand. “So, you ready to drop the act now?” she said coldly.
lan’s deep–set eyes locked onto Chloe’s reaction as he slowly got to his feet, careful not to make any sudden
moves.
Standing in front of her, he said in a low voice, “I really did have too much to drink.”
Chloe gave him a knowing look. “Spill it. Whose idea was this?”
The two of them stared at each other for a moment, then lan lowered his head and muttered, “Patrick.”
He threw both himself and Patrick under the bus.
Chloe couldn’t help but let out a mocking laugh.
‘Guess Ian must’ve left his brains back in our previous life, Chloe thought to herself.
Chloe patted Ian on the shoulder. “Just sit tight for a bit. I’m gonna hit the restroom, then I’ll take you home.”
Ian was honestly surprised. ‘She’s not mad? And she’s not even giving me grief for my little trick?‘ he thought.
Chloe walked out of the private room, left the club without looking back, and hailed a cab home.
On the way, she made sure to grab some late–night snacks for her family.
Next Monday, she’d be starting her internship at the Jordan family’s private hospital in Verdantville.
She wasn’t about to let the tragedies of her previous life happen all over again.
All she wished was for both herself and Ian to live their own lives, healthy and free.
She was determined to be a playful little mischief–maker and actually enjoy herself, instead of slogging through life feeling miserable day after day.
She was going to hustle hard, stack up some cash, take good care of herself–and the people she loved.
That was what Chloe had in mind.
But the Hamiltons? They were a whole different story.
With the end–of–month wedding creeping up, and lan and Chloe still not having even picked up their

Early that morning, Miranda spotted lan coming down the stairs and intercepted him at the staircase. “So, when are you two finally getting your marriage registered?”
Ian looked down, keeping his expression guarded. “No rush,” he said softly.
Miranda shot him a skeptical look.
She gave lan a quick once–over, then, unable to help herself, leaned in to sniff at the cologne he was wearing.
Miranda’s face was all business. “Has that Sherman girl come back?”
At the mention of Andrea’s name, Ian’s expression instinctively soured.
His face darkened, and he reminded Miranda, choosing his words carefully, “Mom, Chloe and I are about to get married. Can you just drop that?”
Miranda jabbed a finger in Ian’s face. “You think I enjoy dredging this up? Chloe’s been chasing after you for years. If that woman wasn’t still on your mind, would you really be treating Chloe this way?”
Jan looked worn out as he shook his head. “Mom, stop imagining things. There’s nothing going on.”
Miranda scoffed, her eyes flashing with accusation. “Don’t tell me you guilt–tripped Chloe into dumping you, just so you could smoothly marry Andrea at the end of the month like nothing ever happened!”
Ian fired back without thinking, “If I’m ever getting married, it’s gotta be Chloe–no one else even comes close!”
Jan dodged Miranda’s questions and bolted out of Hamilton Manor as fast as he could.
Miranda stood at the staircase, watching his departing figure, a hint of worry showing in her eyes.
All these years, Miranda had always known just how much Chloe loved Ian.
And when it came to how Ian felt about Chloe, Miranda understood that better than anyone.

Tve given some serious thought about marrying lan–truth is, after all these years, I’ve only ever seen him as a dear friend.
