"So, they already chose who’s going on the mission, huh?" one of the guards in the family wing said, breaking the silence with his dragging voice. He leaned back, hands shoved into his pockets, mind drifting somewhere else.

"They really just chose those in the Inner Circle," he muttered, unsure how to feel about it.

The men around him glanced his way until one finally asked, "Did you submit your form?"

"Yeah," he replied with a sigh. "I did."

But of course, he wasn’t chosen. Even though the weakest team in the Order was already too numb to be bothered by the label — too numb from all the mockery from other groups and even their own circle — being rejected still left an unpleasant sting.

"Just think, not all of them will come back alive," one of them joked, though the attempt at comfort failed miserably.

Missions were always risky and dangerous. But that didn’t stop them. They had pride and egos that needed proving too.

"From what I heard, Haji is joining this mission," another remarked. "I saw him earlier with Sir Allen. Good for him. At least he finally has something better to do than beat the training dummy every day."

The others nodded. Strange as Haji was, they were genuinely glad he could finally contribute. If he wasn’t lying about being bored, then surely, going to Ravah Territory would be good for him.

"Did you guys send your forms?" one asked curiously. "It’s better to know I’m not the only one who wasn’t chosen."

A few raised their hands and replied together, "I did."

"That makes me feel better," the first speaker laughed, earning grunts and eye-rolls from the others.

Their attention soon drifted to the corner where Izu stood, watching the twins and their cats.

"Hey," one guard leaned in, whispering while still staring at their captain, "do you think the captain requested to join the mission?"

They all paused. Silence stretched until one of them shook his head.

"I doubt it," he said. "Even though the captain trains the hardest, I feel like he’s stopped signing up for missions unless the Master orders him directly."

They shook their heads and changed the subject. This was somehow more depressing than not being chosen for the mission.
