Chapter 638 A Desperate Act
A person only has so much blood in their body.
If someone who cut their wrists was rushed to the hospital, they could likely be saved. But after a delay of a day and a night, the chance of survival was zero.
She knew James was, in all likelihood, gone.
But she still had to leave this place.
Mergan was a complete madman. She didn’t believe he would truly let the children in her belly live.
She also had to find Nancy and the others to confirm if that was really James’s gravestone.
She had to bring her children back to the Luke family.
If James was still alive, their family would be together, never to be separated again.
If he was truly gone, she would force herself to hold on, to wait for their children to be born safely, and to watch them grow…
“Lily, you can’t bring the dead back to life. Don’t be sad.”
Mergan couldn’t stand seeing her grieve for another man. He gently pulled her into his arms. “You still have me.”
“I’ll take good care of you, and I’ll never be separated from you.”
“Don’t touch me!”
Being held by Mergan, Lily felt as if a venomous snake was coiling around her.
She recoiled as if she’d been stabbed, shoving him away. “Who needs your care? Who wants to ‘never be separated‘ from you? I won’t believe he’s dead until I see his body with my own eyes. He promised he would be with me forever. He wouldn’t just die like this…”
Lily tried to convince herself, over and over, that she couldn’t fully believe Mergan’s lies. She had to stay strong for her children. Only if she and the children were safe was there any chance of a reunion with James.
But the overwhelming, unceasing heartache, along with the surge of despair, consumed her.
In that instant, she felt as if she had split in two.

One part was resilient and brave, telling her she had to live, that she couldn’t give up hope, if only for the babies.
The other part was broken and in pain, telling her she had to be with James, whether in life or
in death.
In the end, the broken part of her briefly triumphed. She rushed to the window, ready to throw it open and jump.
“Lily!”
Mergan’s face drained of color.
He thought telling her the news would stop her from constantly thinking of leaving him for James. He never imagined she would try to jump.
This was the fourth floor.
The ground below was covered in broken glass.
If she jumped, she had no chance of survival.
The cool night wind hit Lily’s face, snapping her back to reality.
If she were alone, she could die.
But she was carrying two small lives. What right did she have to selfishly decide their fate?
If James was really gone, these babies were the only part of him left in the world. She had to take care of them.
James, I miss you so much…
I truly hope Mergan is lying…
But in that video, your face… so lifeless. You lost so much blood. I’m so scared…
Lily climbed numbly down from the windowsill.
Before her feet even touched the floor, Mergan grabbed her, holding her tightly.
His chest was heaving, his voice thick with lingering terror and a desperate fear of loss.
“Lily, don’t do anything stupid… We’ve known each other for sixteen years. How long have you even known James? You used to care about me so much. You will again. Don’t do something this foolish for someone unimportant, alright?”

Lily blankly peeled Mergan’s hands off her.
