The night was quiet, and as I looked up, I could see the stars twinkling in the sky.
1 stood in front of the car, watching as Lucas and his younger brother, Maxwell Harris, walked out
one after another.
I walked up, gently brushing the cut on Lucas’s face, my heart aching as I asked, “Does it hurt?”
Lucas shook his head, coldly glancing at Maxwell. “Get in the car.”
Maxwell didn’t dare speak, lowering his head and getting into the car.
The car door slammed shut with a loud bang. Before I could turn back, Lucas finally looked at me.
“Was it that man who contacted you today?” he asked.
I froze, trying to pull my hand back, but Lucas gripped it tightly in his palm.
He pressed his lips together. “Don’t lie to me.‘
A sharp ache pierced my chest as I looked at Lucas. I tried to bury my discomfort, as I usually did,
but in that moment, staring into his calm eyes, I finally spoke.
“Yes. His name is Alexander Whitmore.”
For the first time, I didn’t feel alone, because Lucas was here, right in front of me.
Why couldn’t I lean on him just once? Why did I have to bear everything alone?
My eyes suddenly welled up. “He said he could pay back the money, but I’d have to break up with
you.”
Lucas looked at me. “What was your
answer?”
“I refused.”
I tugged at the corner of my mouth, biting my lip. “Lucas, will you hate me?”
A glimmer of tenderness appeared in Lucas’s eyes. He reached out and pulled me into his
embrace.
“No, Evelyn, you did well.

“This has nothing to do with you. It’s Maxwell’s fault, and he should face the consequences. Never do something you don’t want to for me, promise me?”
I rested against his chest, hearing his steady heartbeat thumping in my ears.
Suddenly, like an instinct, I looked up and, over Lucas’s shoulder, glanced at the top floor of the
club.
A figure stood before the floor–to–ceiling window. The dim light stretched his shadow long, as if it would never end.
He was watching me, silently.
My heart suddenly tightened. I slowly closed my eyes, burying my face deeper into Lucas’s chest.
I hugged his waist tightly, as if with him, I wasn’t alone.
“I love you, Lucas.”
Lucas chuckled lightly, lowering his head to kiss my forehead. “I know.”
My eyes suddenly grew warm. “Lucas, no matter what happens, remember, I love you.‘
“I know.‘
On the top floor, Alexander stared coldly at the two embracing below, his eyes darkening.
His assistant, standing behind him, handed him the IOU. “Mr. Whitmore, the lender has left, but
the IOU remains.”
Alexander gave the IOU a passing glance before, unexpectedly, thinking of Evelyn’s tears. His heart clenched in frustration.
He had thought she would agree. Three years ago, she had never rejected anything he asked of her.
That Lucas—was he just a passing fancy for Evelyn, or was she serious about him?
Alexander pressed his forehead, a wave of frustration rising. “Burn the IOU.”
The assistant froze. “What about Miss Hartwell?”
Alexander pressed his lips together and looked at the car leaving below.

“She will come back.”
As the car drove down the road, I turned and looked at the desolate night outside the window, my heart still unsettled.
Earlier, I had rejected Alexander’s demand but agreed to another condition.
No matter when, no matter where, within five calls, if he contacted me, I would drop everything and go to him.
