I threw on something simple and rushed over.

The doctor greeted me with a warm smile, sliding a sheet of paper across the desk.

Congratulations, Ms. Brown. You’re going to be a mother.

My fingers trembled as I clutched the thin page.

I had waited three years for this moment.

And now, when it finally came-

He didn’t love me anymore.

Could I still keep this child?

I stumbled out of the exam room, dazed.

And walked straight into Delilah.

Her eyes lit up the second she saw me, and she ran toward me, cheerful as ever.

Claire? Wow! What are the odds? What are you doing here?

Instinctively, I hid the pregnancy report behind my back.

Youwhat about you?I asked.

She pouted, holding up her own medical papers.

I’ve been feeling off latelynausea, no appetite. My friend said I might be pregnant, so I came

in to check.

She rolled her eyes with playful exasperation.

But hearing the word pregnantfrom her lips still hurt me hard.

And you? What brings you to the hospital?she asked innocently.

I forced down the lump in my throat, my voice barely audible.

Just a cold. Nothing serious.

I even managed a shaky smile.

Before either of us could say another word, a man barreled through the hallway, carrying a child in

his arms.

Somebody help! Doctor! My sonhe’s not breathing!

Panic rippled through the waiting area.

I instinctively reached for Delilah’s wrist to pull her aside.

But the man collided into us at full force.

We were both knocked down hard.

Delilah landed on top of me, using my body as a cushion.

My back slammed into the cold tile with brutal impact.

As I struggled to sit up, I spotted himNathan, walking in with a bag of takeout.

His eyes immediately locked on Delilah, who was curled up on the floor, clutching her stomach in

pain.

His entire expression shifted in a flash.

The food hit the ground with a thud.

Delilah! Baby, are you okay? Where does it hurt? I’m here, I’ve got you.

He dropped to his knees beside her, touching her like she was made of porcelain.

Saw me.

Lying there, just feet away.

His eyes narrowed into something dangerous.

Claire?he hissed. What the hell are you doing here?

You knew about her, didn’t you? You’ve been following me!

You pushed her, didn’t you? You’re trying to kill our baby!

No!I gasped, struggling to rise. It wasn’t like that, I-

But Delilah’s soft whimper cut me off.

Her tearstimed perfectlysnapped the last thread of Nathan’s reason.

He lunged forward like a man possessed.

And kicked me.

Right in the stomach.

Pain exploded through me, radiating out from my abdomen like fire.

I collapsed, my body writhing on the floor.

From above, he glared down at meno remorse, no loveonly hate.
