The phone’s shrill ring just wouldn’t stop.
Charles sucked in a breath, wrestling down the tide of fury and panic boiling in his chest. He forced his breathing steady, and when he spoke, his voice came out calm—almost unnaturally so, hiding every trace of the tempest within. “Ms. Cipoletti—”
He barely got the words out. Suddenly, a voice crashed through the receiver—a desperate, trembling wail on the edge of sobs.
“Daddy—!”
That cry hit him like a white-hot needle, cutting through every last bit of composure he’d tried to hold onto.
“Charlie!” he choked out, his voice ragged. In a flash, he shot up from his chair like he’d been hit with a jolt of electricity. The chair scraped loudly against the floor, the sound harsh and jarring.
On the other end, Luna caught it all—a crack in his armor, clear as day.
Her lips curled into a cold, triumphant smile.
See? That little brat was always her trump card, her most reliable puppet, the weapon that never missed its mark. As long as she held the strings, Charles would never break free.
All she had to do was get him out of the way, leave Evelyn alone and unprotected in that hotel room…
Her “hunter” would slip in, silent as a shadow.
To destroy those hands built for art?
That was just the beginning.
She wanted to shatter every last hope Evelyn had, leave her drowning in despair for the rest of her days.
“Mr. Jenkins!”
Luna’s tone shifted instantly, laced now with just the right amount of panic and helplessness, her words tumbling out in a rush. “Can you come over? Right now? Aurora… she…”
“She’s really not herself tonight! She keeps fighting nightmares—I can’t wake her, no matter what! Just now, she started crying for ‘Daddy’… Do you think, maybe deep down, she still needs her father? Still wants to see you?”
She sounded like the picture of an anxious, loving mother, but every word was a scalpel, slicing right into the softest part of Charles’s heart.
He couldn’t resist. Not for a second.

The readers' comments on the novel: The Day Our Promise Breaks (Charles and Evelyn)
I'm fed up with this novel eish...
What a bad novel. Evil deeds rules the entire story, no ending, villains characters succeed, no way out for the good people. I was hoping for better twists but disappointed again and again. Time close the book for me, no more, enough....
When will Evelyn's sufferings end? You mean to say evil rules the world? No longer funny, the twists are getting ridiculous....
Wow Finally! Thanks!...
More chapters please...
