Reese watched Sofia and her companion disappear down the hallway, her eyes narrowing. She pulled out her phone, ready to call security and ask them to pull the surveillance footage.
Before she could even dial, a large hand appeared behind her, long fingers effortlessly slipping the phone from her grasp.
She spun around and found herself face to face with Matthew.
He pressed the power button, locking her phone before placing it gently back in her palm. His eyes met hers, calm and certain. “Let me handle this.”
Reese blinked, caught off guard. “You know what I was about to do?”
A slow, knowing smile played at the corners of Matthew’s mouth. “People always say a lion never looks back when it’s bitten by a dog. But honestly? I think the real fool is the one who gets bitten and doesn’t bite back.”
He’d come in just as Sofia left with another man. He didn’t need an explanation—he could already guess Sofia was up to something.
“If someone tries to mess with you, you push back,” he said quietly. “Doesn’t matter who she is or where she’s from. She’ll only stop if you show her you’re not someone to mess with.”
Reese felt something stir in her chest, a weight sinking a little deeper.
Her whole life—growing up in the Ramos family’s house, then marrying into the Ratcliffs where she was always the outsider—she’d learned to keep her head down. She’d always taken on more, stayed quiet, put up with things just to keep everyone else happy.
This was the first time she’d even thought of fighting back, of gathering evidence and standing up to Sofia.
She always assumed someone would tell her she was making things worse or being petty.
But Matthew was the first person who’d ever told her it was okay to fight back when she was wronged.
She found herself really looking at him for the first time. His eyes were dark and memorizing, and she could see her own reflection in them, clear as day.
Matthew’s hand brushed over her hair, so gently she barely felt it. His voice was soft, almost a whisper. “Reese, you can trust me a little more.”
Trust him a little more?
