Sofia’s eyes filled with tears as she watched Hank standing there, silent and cold. Matthew’s words from earlier kept echoing in her head, making her panic even more. Her voice shook as she pleaded, her eyes red and desperate.
“Hank, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean it, I swear! I just… I lost my mind for a second. Please, you have to help me! I’ll never do it again!”
Hank’s face darkened. He looked like he wanted to say something, but before he could, agents walked in.
“Sofia, according to Lyla’s confession, you pushed her to steal the BlackOak data. We need you to come with us for questioning.”
As soon as the agent finished, all the color drained from Sofia’s face. Her crying turned to pure panic.
“No, that’s not true! Lyla did it herself, it has nothing to do with me!”
She stumbled and lunged at Hank, grabbing onto his suit like a lifeline, her nails digging in.
“Hank, please, say something! I’m innocent! You have to save me. If you don’t, my life is over!”
She was crying so hard she could barely breathe, tears and snot smearing her face and ruining her perfect makeup. Her hair hung in messy clumps around her neck. She didn’t look anything like the confident, glamorous girl she usually was.
Hank looked down at her shaking shoulders, his fingers twitching like he wanted to help but couldn’t bring himself to do it.
He turned his face away, refusing to meet her eyes. “Sofia, if you really didn’t do it, they’ll find out. Once the investigation is over, you’ll be free.”
Sofia stared up at him, shocked. She hadn’t expected him to turn his back on her. She lost her balance and fell to the floor, her eyes wide with disbelief and anger.
“Hank… you’re really not going to save me?”
Hank looked away, his voice barely above a whisper. “You did this yourself. Now you have to deal with the consequences.”
The agents stepped forward, pulling Sofia up by her arms.
She fought like crazy, screaming his name, her voice raw and full of heartbreak. “Hank! I hate you! I’ll never forgive you for this!”
