The Doormat Wife’s Ultimate Glow-Up novel Chapter 188

“Yes.”

The assistant glanced at the old man lying in bed, his face etched with the final signs of life. There was pity in his eyes he couldn’t hide.

Suddenly, Mr. Ratcliff started coughing hard, the fit rattling his frail body until it finally eased.

“Tomorrow, have Sebastian and Robbie come in for checkups. If they’ve inherited this illness, we need to catch it early and start treatment.”

At that moment, on the first floor of the hospital—

The black Bentley hadn’t even stopped before Reese burst out, heels clacking in a rush across the shiny floor.

“Slow down,” Sebastian called, close behind, catching her frantic energy.

The sharp smell of disinfectant hit as soon as they stepped into the ER lobby. Reese spotted the housekeeper right away, looking completely out of place and panicked in the waiting area.

“Where’s Annie? How is she?”

“Ms. Meyer!” The housekeeper’s voice trembled with relief. “They just took her into emergency. The doctor said she’s got acute pneumonia, and the infection’s spreading. She needs to be admitted right away.”

“Acute pneumonia...”

The words echoed in Reese’s head. Everything felt fuzzy, the world tilting as guilt crashed over her. If she’d just paid a little more attention…

A warm, steady hand caught her around the waist, keeping her upright before she could fall.

“Calm down. The doctors are with her. She’ll be okay.”

Sebastian’s deep, calm voice cut through the chaos in her mind and helped her steady herself.

Reese took a shaky breath and pulled out of his hold.

“I’ll handle the admission paperwork.”

She turned for the nurses’ station, but her steps felt wobbly, the hallway swimming in and out of focus.

Sebastian noticed something was off. Her face was far too pale, sweat beading along her hairline. He caught her wrist, worry in his eyes.

“You’re not okay.”

He looked over his shoulder at the driver. “Go get Annie admitted. Find the best pediatricians available.”

The driver rushed off without a word.

Reese let out a quiet, bitter laugh.

Men really were unpredictable. Who knew how long Sebastian’s kindness would last this time?

When Sebastian came back with her medicine and the driver finished Annie’s admission, they headed up to the VIP pediatric ward.

Reese brushed off Sebastian’s attempt to help her, forcing herself to walk in on her own.

Once everything was settled, the room finally quieted down. Annie lay on the bed, cheeks flushed with fever, breathing fast, a tiny IV taped to her hand.

Reese sat by her side, gently holding Annie’s small hand, the guilt rising up all over again.

“Take your medicine first.”

Sebastian came over with a glass of water, dropping the pills into his palm and holding them out to her.

“Thanks.”

Reese didn’t argue. She knew getting well was the only way she could take care of Annie. She swallowed the pills and handed the cup back.

Sebastian noticed her resistance fading and a small, soft smile appeared on his lips.
