The doctor paused before continuing, “Given the Ratcliffs’ position and Ratcliff Global’s influence, things are already a mess inside the company. Aiden said Mr. Ratcliff hasn’t made a will yet. She hopes we can give him enough time to put his affairs in order.
“I just remembered, there’s a special drug the military uses. It could bring him back to consciousness for a little while, maybe long enough to write a will.
“He’s really sick, and this drug can’t save his life, but it might buy him ten or fifteen minutes, just enough to get his last wishes down. If you have any way to get it, don’t wait.”
Leslie’s smile vanished.
A special drug? No way she could let the Ratcliffs get their hands on something like that. Mr. Ratcliff had seen her face. If he woke up and told everyone, she’d be finished.
Reese’s eyes lit up with hope. If she could just get that drug and bring Grandpa back, they’d finally learn who tried to hurt him.
“Doctor, where can we get this medication?” Reese asked, her voice a little shaky.
The doctor nodded, looking serious. “It’s a new emergency drug the military developed for stabilizing people after severe injuries. It can temporarily wake someone up by stimulating the nervous system, but it’s strictly controlled. Only high-ranking officers can request it, and you need a clear medical reason.
“If you have any way to get it, hurry. He doesn’t have much time.”
“Military supplies?” Jane repeated. Her eyes sharpened as she pulled out her phone and scrolled for a number.
“Who are you trying to fool with this act?” she snapped. “Everyone knows how strict the military is. Once they’re on assignment, no one can reach them, not even family. If I can’t get through to Peter, what chance do you have with no connections?
“You’re just desperate to clear your name. But the evidence is right here. What else do you have to say for yourself?”
“Jane!” Reese finally lost her patience. “Let me say this one more time. Do not accuse me before the police’s investigation.”
Jane had never been yelled at by Reese before. Furious, she raised her hand and slapped Reese hard across the face. “Reese, I’m your mother-in-law. How dare you speak to me like that!”
