The Doormat Wife’s Ultimate Glow-Up novel Chapter 217

“And now you’re actually defending the one who started all of this?”

“Just shut up!”

Hank’s face turned bright red, every bit of self-control snapping in an instant. He lunged forward, reaching through the bars to grab Reese’s wrist, squeezing so hard it felt like he was trying to break her bones.

“You were freaking out in the car, making Mom lose focus and crash! You killed her! All these years, you’ve never felt guilty for a second. Instead, you throw the blame on Grace. How could you be so heartless?”

Reese’s wrist throbbed with pain, but her chest hurt even more. She jerked her arm, desperate to break free, and scratched Hank’s hand with her nails, leaving lines of blood.

“Heartless? Me?

“You spent all this time blaming me for Mom’s death, while treating Grace like some stand-in for her!

“After all these years, do you even remember Mom? Do you ever dream about her? Doesn’t it bother you that she might never rest in peace?”

The pain finally made Hank let go. He stepped back, pressing his bleeding hand, shaking his head hard.

“No! I haven’t! I never saw Grace as Mom’s replacement! Don’t think you can say whatever you want and I’ll go soft on you, Reese!”

“What’s going on in here?”

Two officers rushed in, blocking Hank as he tried to move toward Reese again.

“This is a police station, Mr. Meyer. Please leave.”

Hank glared at Reese over the officers’ shoulders, his eyes ice cold. “I was going to bail you out, but you know what? You can stay here a few more days and think about what you’ve done.

“I never should’ve cared about you at all.”

Reese leaned against the wall, watching him storm off. Cold seeped into her bones. A single tear slipped down her cheek, but she wiped it away hard, her jaw set.

“I don’t need your pity. I’m not a kid anymore.”

She sniffed, dropping back into the corner, Hank’s words echoing in her mind.
