“I wish she’d just disappear already. I couldn’t care less about her problems.”
“Sofia!” Grace’s voice snapped through the phone, sharp and commanding. “If I ask you to look into something, you do it. This is about whether we get to stay in the Meyer family. If they want to give her a few shares, let them. Don’t forget, what really matters is the Meyer Group itself.”
Sofia’s complaints died in her throat as Grace’s words hit her. A nervous chill crept up her spine. She hesitated, then asked, “Mom, is something wrong? Does this have anything to do with Reese’s mom’s accident?”
“That’s none of your business,” Grace replied, taking a steadying breath. Her voice softened. “Just remember, Sofia, you’re my most important girl. Everything I do is for you.”
After ending the call, Grace picked up a photo frame from the table. The picture showed her younger self and Sofia, both of them smiling so brightly it almost hurt to look at. She stared at it for a long time before finally setting it down. Then she left the bedroom and called for a maid.
“Help me pack some clothes. I want to go to Bridger Lake tomorrow.”
The maid headed into the closet, pulling out a suitcase as she spoke. “You’re going to see Mr. Meyer?”
Grace nodded, a gentle smile on her lips. “It’s getting cold out. With him and Hank at Bridger Lake, I just worry they’ll catch something.”
…
At Bridger Lake, Sofia set her phone down, her anxiety twisting tighter with every second. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad was about to happen. If Reese dug up anything, her mother would get dragged in too. She couldn’t sit around and wait.
She went to the kitchen, grabbed a plate of fruit, and headed upstairs, pausing outside the study to knock on the door.
Inside, Bailey and Hank were glued to the TV, sighing over the latest news about Sebastian. Ratcliff Global’s powerful chairman, brought down by a woman. The whole thing was a disaster, and worse, it was messing up their own plans.
“He got dragged in because he vouched for Leslie,” Hank said, shaking his head. “It was all fine until Leslie started talking, exposing that Ratcliff Global had worked with Big X and kept it secret from BlackOak when they were developing Blade. You act like you care about him, but it’s obvious he’s lost his mind over Leslie.”
“So this is all about the Blade project?” Sofia’s eyes lit up with understanding. “Does that mean Reese is involved too?” She hesitated, then quickly added, “I’m just worried. I don’t want us to get caught up in any of this.”
“Don’t worry,” Bailey said, his tone softening a little. “We’re not involved.”
“I heard Leslie’s arrest had something to do with Reese. She’s being praised for it.” Bailey’s face clouded again, thinking of how this forced him to give Reese the shares just to secure the Blade partnership.
Sofia finally relaxed. She smiled, relief clear in her eyes. “That’s all I wanted to know. As long as you and Dad are safe, that’s what matters.”
