The Doormat Wife’s Ultimate Glow-Up novel Chapter 354

Alex’s voice was rough, barely more than a whisper. Reese held her breath, giving him a gentle nod to let him know he could take his time.

Out of nowhere, a thunderous crash rattled the security door. Someone started pounding on it, fast and desperate. Grace’s voice rang out, sharp and urgent. “Alex, don’t let Reese fool you. You think telling her the truth about back then means you’re off the hook?”

While she called for Seth to force the door open, Grace kept shouting, “She’s always known what really happened. She’s here for payback. If you give her that evidence, you’re just setting yourself up. It’s because of the evidence she helped find that your daughter got arrested.”

Alex glanced at Reese. Her face had drained of color, and for a second, it looked like he was starting to believe Grace.

Reese felt his eyes on her and met his gaze, steady and clear. “Alex, I didn’t hurt Leslie and I’m not out for revenge. I just want justice for my mom. That’s all I’m after. You have to believe me. Leslie really was a foreign spy. The National Security Bureau had been watching her for a long time.”

With a loud click, the old security door gave way. Grace strode in, four men in black trailing behind her.

“Reese, do you really expect us to believe Leslie’s arrest had nothing to do with you?” Grace’s eyes swept the living room, a glimmer of relief in her expression. She’d gotten here just in time. Reese had gotten better at dodging her people, managing to sneak in and meet Alex. But now, Grace was sure she’d keep the evidence out of Reese’s hands.

Grace turned to Reese with a thin, cold smile. “You can only fool Alex. Everyone at Bridger Lake knows what you did. You helped the authorities catch Leslie stealing data, and then you didn’t hesitate to turn in your own mother-in-law and husband.”

As Alex looked at Reese, doubt flickered in his eyes. Grace saw it and smirked. “Alex, you and I are in the same boat. Trust me, I’d never hurt you. Do you really think someone as ruthless as her, who would even set up her own father, is going to let you walk away just because you hand over that recording?”

“Grace, you’re mixing up two totally different things.” Matthew reached out to steady Reese, then faced Alex, his tone low and steady. “Alex, even if you don’t hand over the evidence, you really think the police won’t eventually dig up the truth? You’ll end up just as guilty as Grace. You might as well help us and tell us where the recording is.”

Matthew glanced at Grace and then back at Alex. “Besides, if Grace really cared about you so much, why would your wife work herself sick just to take care of your daughter? Why does your daughter resent you so much?”

“Shut up. I’ve been sending him money all these years,” Grace shot back.

Alex’s head was spinning. He looked at Reese, then at Matthew. Reese hadn’t exactly denied what Grace said, but Matthew’s words made sense too. He turned to Grace. Money really had been showing up in his account over the years, and maybe, just maybe, Grace wasn’t to blame for everything that happened to his wife and daughter…
