Penelope rode the elevator to the top floor, the nerve center of the guild, where floor-to-ceiling windows offered a sweeping view. This place, equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance and defense systems, was reserved for the family heads.

As she stepped out, the overhead scanner quickly recognized her, granting her access. Just as she was about to reach the office, her phone rang. She answered, “Hey, I’m here now. Be right over.”

With a determined look, Penelope pocketed her phone and headed to a small conference room through a door on her right. Inside, seven or eight people were already gathered around the table—branch leaders and a few elders from the Davis family.

Jaime gestured for her to sit and asked, “Did you get a chance to visit the hospital?”

Penelope nodded. “I did, but I didn’t get to see Keir.”

“What? Even you were turned away?” The second elder looked surprised, given Penelope’s unique standing.

Penelope nodded again, her face calm. “As long as Keir is okay.”

The elder to her right sighed, “I’m afraid that might not be the case.”

Penelope turned to him, curious.

“I spoke with Dr. Ray privately,” he continued. “He mentioned that Keir’s condition is almost like a coma, with slim chances of waking up.”

Jim had indeed brought the Davis family to its peak, but if his condition endangered their status, they wouldn’t stand for it. Used to being in charge, they weren’t keen on being overshadowed.

Plus, Jim had no heirs, a big no-no for a family like theirs. Even though Mr. Nick had been groomed, he was still Mr. Davis’s son, and since Mr. Davis had stepped away from family affairs, and Mr. Nick wasn’t interested either, they had started considering younger candidates for succession.

Penelope was in the running.

“You’ve got potential, Penelope, a bright future,” Jaime said with a knowing look.

He wasn’t worried about her standing up for Keir; he knew her well enough to know she wouldn’t stay in anyone’s shadow for long.
