Stella was about to say something, but Joshua cut her off. "Either way, there's no way I'm letting you sleep in a chair all night."
"There are two of us," he continued firmly. "I'll take the first half of the night, you take the second. It's perfectly fair."
Since they weren't sharing a bed, Stella didn't find the situation too awkward. In fact, she felt a pang of guilt. She had come here to treat him, yet she was the one ending up in the comfortable bed.
"Besides," Joshua added, "I don't go out during the day, so I can catch up on sleep then. Otherwise, I'd just be bored."
Stella knew he was just saying that to ease her guilt.
She stopped arguing. "Alright. I'm going to go wash up, then I'll head out to buy us some breakfast."
Ten minutes after Stella left, there was a soft knock on the door before it creaked open. Joshua, assuming it was Stella, was surprised to see a middle-aged woman step inside.
It was the innkeeper's wife.
"Ms. Cameron went out to get you food," she explained. "She asked me to look after you for a bit. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."
Joshua's voice was polite but distant. "Thank you."
The woman waved her hands. "Oh, there's no need for that—it's the least I can do." She paused, then cleared her throat, looking slightly embarrassed. "Before... I’m afraid I was rather rude to both of you."
Joshua's eyes narrowed. The air grew still, and a sudden chill seemed to settle over the space.
"And then what?" he asked, his voice dangerously low.
The sheer intensity of his presence made the innkeeper's wife falter. She stammered, "N-nothing happened to Ms. Cameron! In fact, she taught those hooligans a lesson they won't soon forget…"
As for *how* she taught them a lesson? With a gun, of course. Stella had fired without a moment's hesitation, a true force to be reckoned with. The innkeeper's wife had been paying protection money to those thugs for years and seeing Stella put them in their place had been incredibly satisfying.
She continued her praise of Stella, "Even after being harassed by lowlifes, she didn't complain or say a word about it. She just kept right on taking care of you. You've got a good one there, boy. Don't you let her go."
